Jessica smiled nervously as she stood on the doorstep, holding a bottle of red wine.<\/p>\n
“Hi,” she said softly.<\/p>\n
“I hope I’m not late.”<\/p>\n
I smiled warmly.<\/p>\n
“Not at all.”<\/p>\n
“Come in.”<\/p>\n
She looked surprised by how friendly I sounded.<\/p>\n
As she stepped inside, every eye in the apartment turned toward her.<\/p>\n
My husband walked over wearing the biggest grin I’d seen all week.<\/p>\n
“I’m so glad you made it.”<\/p>\n
Jessica hugged him politely, but there was something awkward about it.<\/p>\n
She looked around the room.<\/p>\n

“I brought a housewarming gift too.”<\/p>\n
“You didn’t have to,” I said.<\/p>\n

She handed me a neatly wrapped box.<\/p>\n
I placed it on the kitchen counter without opening it.<\/p>\n
Then I picked up my glass and gently tapped it with a spoon.<\/p>\n
The room became quiet.<\/p>\n
“I just want to thank everyone for coming.”<\/p>\n
People smiled.<\/p>\n
My husband slipped an arm around my waist.<\/p>\n
“This apartment has been the beginning of an exciting new chapter.”<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
“It certainly has.”<\/p>\n
I paused.<\/p>\n
“And since we’re celebrating new beginnings…”<\/p>\n
“…I’d like to make one announcement.”<\/p>\n
He looked at me, confused.<\/p>\n
“What announcement?”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“The mature one.”<\/p>\n
A few guests laughed.<\/p>\n
“I spent the last forty-eight hours thinking about what maturity really means.”<\/p>\n
“Maturity isn’t pretending something doesn’t hurt.”<\/p>\n
“It isn’t allowing people to disrespect you so they can call you insecure.”<\/p>\n
“It isn’t smiling while someone else tests your boundaries.”<\/p>\n
The room grew completely silent.<\/p>\n
I gently removed his arm from my waist.<\/p>\n
“So tonight…”<\/p>\n
“I’m giving my husband exactly what he offered me.”<\/p>\n
He frowned.<\/p>\n
“What are you talking about?”<\/p>\n
“You told me that if I couldn’t handle your choices…”<\/p>\n
“…I was free to leave.”<\/p>\n
“I thought about that.”<\/p>\n
“And I realized…”<\/p>\n
“…you were absolutely right.”<\/p>\n
I reached behind the couch and pulled out my packed duffel bag.<\/p>\n
Gasps echoed around the room.<\/p>\n
“I’ve already moved everything important.”<\/p>\n
“My finances are separate.”<\/p>\n
“My friend is waiting for me.”<\/p>\n
His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
“Wait…”<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
I reached into my purse and handed him my wedding ring.<\/p>\n
“It turns out…”<\/p>\n
“I don’t have a problem with Jessica.”<\/p>\n
“I have a problem with a husband who wanted his wife’s feelings to come second to his ex-girlfriend.”<\/p>\n
Jessica suddenly spoke.<\/p>\n
“Wait…”<\/p>\n
She looked at him.<\/p>\n
“You told me she was completely okay with this.”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“He did.”<\/p>\n

“You said she’d invited me herself because you two had talked it through.”<\/p>\n
His face went pale.<\/p>\n

Jessica interrupted him.<\/p>\n
“You lied to both of us?”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Then she placed the bottle of wine on the table.<\/p>\n
“I’m leaving.”<\/p>\n
She looked at me.<\/p>\n
“I’m truly sorry.”<\/p>\n
“I had no idea.”<\/p>\n
She walked out without another word.<\/p>\n
My husband tried to follow her.<\/p>\n
“Jessica, wait!”<\/p>\n
She never looked back.<\/p>\n
Then he turned toward me.<\/p>\n
“You embarrassed me.”<\/p>\n
I calmly picked up my bag.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“You embarrassed yourself.”<\/p>\n
I walked toward the front door.<\/p>\n
Halfway there, I turned around one last time.<\/p>\n
“You wanted me to be mature.”<\/p>\n
“So here’s the most mature decision I’ve ever made.”<\/p>\n
“I refuse to stay with someone who mistakes disrespect for honesty.”<\/p>\n
I closed the door behind me.<\/p>\n
As I stepped outside, Sarah’s car pulled up to the curb.<\/p>\n
She rolled down the window.<\/p>\n
“Ready?”<\/p>\n
I smiled for the first time all week.<\/p>\n
“More than ever.”<\/p>\n
