There wasn’t just one car in the garage.<\/p>\n

The first was Brian’s pickup truck.<\/p>\n

The driver’s seat was covered with a pink blanket.<\/p>\n

A child’s car seat was strapped into the back.<\/p>\n

My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n

On a shelf beside the SUV sat dozens of framed photographs.<\/p>\n

Brian.<\/p>\n

A woman.<\/p>\n

And a little girl who couldn’t have been older than six.<\/p>\n

I picked up one of the pictures.<\/p>\n

Brian was smiling exactly the way he smiled in our wedding photos.<\/p>\n

Only this time…<\/p>\n

…his arm was around another woman.<\/p>\n

I collapsed onto an old workbench.<\/p>\n

For eleven years, I had trusted him with everything.<\/p>\n

Had he been living a second life?<\/p>\n

Barely able to breathe, I searched through the drawers beneath the bench.<\/p>\n

Inside was a folder labeled “Emma.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

My hands shook as I opened it.<\/p>\n

The first document wasn’t a birth certificate.<\/p>\n

It was a hospital file.<\/p>\n

Emma Collins.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Age: 6.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diagnosis: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There were invoices.<\/p>\n

Medical reports.<\/p>\n

Insurance appeals.<\/p>\n

Receipts totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n

Then I found a handwritten letter.<\/p>\n

I read it twice.<\/p>\n

Brian stood there, suitcase still in his hand.<\/p>\n

Then at the photographs spread across the floor.<\/p>\n

His face went completely pale.<\/p>\n

“I can explain.”<\/p>\n

“You’d better.”<\/p>\n

He sat down slowly.<\/p>\n

“Twelve years ago…”<\/p>\n

“…before I met you…”<\/p>\n

“…I was engaged.”<\/p>\n

“My fianc\u00e9e died in a car accident when Emma was only a few weeks old.”<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

“I couldn’t raise a newborn alone.”<\/p>\n

“Her grandparents adopted her.”<\/p>\n

“They moved across the country.”<\/p>\n

“I promised I’d stay in her life.”<\/p>\n

He swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

“They asked me not to tell anyone.”<\/p>\n

“Not until Emma was old enough to decide whether she wanted a relationship with me.”<\/p>\n

I looked back at the photographs.<\/p>\n

“So you’ve been seeing her…”<\/p>\n

“…all these years?”<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

“Every month.”<\/p>\n

“I paid for her treatments.”<\/p>\n

“I went to every birthday I could.”<\/p>\n

“I never stopped being her father.”<\/p>\n

Tears filled my eyes.<\/p>\n

“You thought I’d leave you if I knew?”<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“I thought you’d hate me for hiding it.”<\/p>\n

I walked toward him.<\/p>\n

For several long seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n

Then I quietly asked,<\/p>\n

“Is she okay?”<\/p>\n

Brian’s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

“The doctors say she’s finally in remission.”<\/p>\n

I wrapped my arms around him.<\/p>\n

“You should have trusted me.”<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

A month later, Brian introduced me to Emma.<\/p>\n

She was shy at first.<\/p>\n

Then she smiled.<\/p>\n

“You’re the lady Dad says is the bravest person he knows.”<\/p>\n

I laughed through my tears.<\/p>\n

“And your dad forgot to mention…”<\/p>\n

“…that he’s the worst secret keeper in America.”<\/p>\n

Emma giggled.<\/p>\n

That Christmas, the three of us hung the lights together in the living room.<\/p>\n

The same lights I had gone into the garage to find.<\/p>\n

I thought I was about to uncover a betrayal.<\/p>\n

Instead…<\/p>\n
