More than fifty people filled the backyard.<\/p>\n

Neighbors.<\/p>\n

Emily’s parents.<\/p>\n

Her coworkers.<\/p>\n

Parents from Sophie’s school.<\/p>\n

Several people Brian recognized from church.<\/p>\n

Long tables stretched across the lawn, covered with homemade dishes, desserts, balloons, and flowers.<\/p>\n

A large banner hung between two trees.<\/p>\n

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY, EMILY!<\/strong><\/p>\n

No one had waited for Brian.<\/p>\n

Emily stood in the middle of the yard wearing a beautiful blue dress her mother had brought over that morning.<\/p>\n

She was smiling.<\/p>\n

Really smiling.<\/p>\n

Something Brian hadn’t seen in a long time.<\/p>\n

Sophie spotted him first.<\/p>\n

“Daddy’s home!”<\/p>\n

The conversations stopped.<\/p>\n

Every face turned toward him.<\/p>\n

Emily’s mother stepped forward carrying… the padlocked refrigerator.<\/p>\n

Brian blinked.<\/p>\n

“What is this?”<\/p>\n

His father-in-law answered.<\/p>\n

“We borrowed a trailer.”<\/p>\n

The refrigerator stood in the middle of the yard with the heavy lock still hanging from the doors.<\/p>\n

Next to it sat a handwritten sign.<\/p>\n

‘Birthday Gift from a Loving Husband.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

A ripple of uncomfortable laughter spread through the guests.<\/p>\n

Brian’s face flushed deep red.<\/p>\n

“Take that sign down.”<\/p>\n

Emily calmly shook her head.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

Her mother held up Brian’s note.<\/p>\n

She read it aloud.<\/p>\n

“Maybe now you’ll learn who’s in charge.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The silence that followed was deafening.<\/p>\n

One of Brian’s fishing buddies looked at him in disbelief.<\/p>\n

“You actually did that?”<\/p>\n

Brian couldn’t answer.<\/p>\n

His own mother slowly stepped out from the crowd.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t believe Emily when she called.”<\/p>\n

She looked directly at her son.<\/p>\n

“But seeing this…”<\/p>\n

She pointed at the locked refrigerator.<\/p>\n

“…I finally understand.”<\/p>\n

Brian stared at the ground.<\/p>\n

“I was just trying to teach her a lesson.”<\/p>\n

His father spoke for the first time.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“You were trying to humiliate your wife on her birthday.”<\/p>\n

Emily took Sophie’s hand.<\/p>\n

“Our daughter went hungry this morning because of your lesson.”<\/p>\n

Sophie’s small voice broke the silence.<\/p>\n

“I thought Mommy forgot to buy food.”<\/p>\n

Several guests quietly wiped away tears.<\/p>\n

Brian looked around the yard.<\/p>\n

Nobody was on his side.<\/p>\n

Not one person.<\/p>\n

Emily reached into her purse and handed him an envelope.<\/p>\n

“I wasn’t planning to do this today.”<\/p>\n

He opened it.<\/p>\n

Inside were divorce papers.<\/p>\n

His hands began to shake.<\/p>\n

“I’ve already spoken to an attorney.”<\/p>\n

She looked at him with a calmness he had never seen before.<\/p>\n

“You didn’t ruin my birthday.”<\/p>\n

“You showed me exactly what kind of marriage I was living in.”<\/p>\n

A few months later, Emily and Sophie had moved into a small townhouse nearby.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t large.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t fancy.<\/p>\n

But the refrigerator door was never locked.<\/p>\n

Every year after that, Emily celebrated her birthday surrounded by people who loved her.<\/p>\n

And whenever someone asked why there was always an old gray padlock sitting in the center of the birthday table as decoration, she would smile and say,<\/p>\n
