I didn’t throw a plate.<\/p>\n

I simply untied my apron.<\/p>\n

The room went quiet as I folded it neatly and laid it across the back of a chair.<\/p>\n

Then I walked into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

For a moment, everyone assumed I was bringing out dessert.<\/p>\n

Instead, I returned carrying a large plastic container and a stack of aluminum foil.<\/p>\n

I placed them on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince none of you seem to enjoy my cooking,\u201d I said calmly, \u201cplease help yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

They stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve packed everything for you. Take the roast, the salads, the side dishes, even the cake. You won’t have to suffer through another bite in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicole blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent two days preparing this meal,\u201d I replied. \u201cIf it’s so disappointing, there’s no reason for me to keep serving it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia laughed nervously.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, don’t be so sensitive. We were only giving advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cAdvice is asked for. Criticism isn’t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scott shifted uncomfortably in his chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily, you’re making everyone uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve been uncomfortable since yesterday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cleaned this house. I bought the groceries. I cooked every dish on this table. I cut my finger preparing food for people who walked through my front door looking for faults instead of saying thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patricia crossed her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re overreacting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAm I?\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned to the rest of the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid anyone ask if I needed help?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid anyone offer to bring a dish?\u201d<\/p>\n

More silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid anyone thank me before criticizing the food?\u201d<\/p>\n

No one answered.<\/p>\n

I looked back at Scott.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you… all I wanted was one sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n

He lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily…\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne sentence,\u201d I repeated. \u201c’Thanks for everything you did.’ That’s all.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face flushed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t realize\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I interrupted gently. \u201cYou didn’t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room remained still.<\/p>\n

Finally, Scott’s uncle cleared his throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what it’s worth,\u201d he said, \u201cthis is one of the best meals I’ve had in years.\u201d<\/p>\n

His wife nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo is the cake. We were wondering why nobody had thanked you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others began murmuring their agreement.<\/p>\n

Nicole looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

Patricia’s confident expression slowly disappeared.<\/p>\n

Scott stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI owe you an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so focused on having the birthday I wanted that I never stopped to think about what it cost you. Then I let my family criticize you instead of defending you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He took a deep breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou deserved better from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sincerity in his voice was different this time.<\/p>\n

He wasn’t trying to end an argument.<\/p>\n

He was admitting he had failed.<\/p>\n

Patricia started to speak, but Scott raised his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily cooked every single dish here because I asked her to. If anyone should be criticized tonight, it’s me for letting her do it alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The table fell silent once again.<\/p>\n

Then Scott turned to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you’ll let me make it up to you, next weekend we’re going out to dinner. Just the two of us. And from now on, family gatherings will be potlucks or at a restaurant. You shouldn’t have to carry everything by yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

I studied his face.<\/p>\n

For the first time that evening, he looked less concerned about keeping the peace and more concerned about me.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s a good place to start.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dinner resumed, but the mood had changed.<\/p>\n

There were no more comments about the food.<\/p>\n

No more jokes at my expense.<\/p>\n

As the guests left later that evening, several of them thanked me sincerely.<\/p>\n

Patricia quietly muttered, \u201cThe roast was actually very good.\u201d<\/p>\n

I simply smiled.<\/p>\n

The meal wasn’t what everyone remembered from Scott’s fortieth birthday.<\/p>\n
