He told me to go to the park where the other retirees gather.<\/p>\n

To do some light exercise.<\/p>\n

To play checkers or chess.<\/p>\n

To dance.<\/p>\n

To meet new people.<\/p>\n

I looked at him and smiled, but deep inside, I felt something entirely different.<\/p>\n

To me, accepting that invitation felt like admitting that the woman who had spent her whole life ruling the kitchen no longer existed.<\/p>\n

That chapter of my life was over.<\/p>\n

Over the next few days, I avoided going into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

I sat in my chair and stared out the window.<\/p>\n

The house was clean.<\/p>\n

Everything was in order.<\/p>\n

But I felt empty.<\/p>\n

One morning, my husband sat down beside me.<\/p>\n

He took my hand and quietly said,<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you really think we ever loved you only because of your cooking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, let\u2019s write down all your recipes. Exactly the way you make them. Every secret that nobody else knows.\u201d<\/p>\n

We spent hours talking.<\/p>\n

Not just about ingredients.<\/p>\n

But about my grandmother, the first pot I ever burned, Christmas dinners, and my children\u2019s childhood.<\/p>\n

For the first time in many months, I felt useful again.<\/p>\n

Maybe I can\u2019t cook the way I used to.<\/p>\n

But I can still leave something behind.<\/p>\n

And a week later, I agreed to go to the park with my son.<\/p>\n

Not to say goodbye to the woman I used to be.<\/p>\n

But to discover who I could become from this point forward.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I realized that we don\u2019t grow old the day we can no longer do something.<\/p>\n
