For a few seconds, I couldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t the first time she had suggested I move in with them.<\/p>\n
But it was the first time I felt as though everything had already been planned.<\/p>\n
As if the decision had been made without me.<\/p>\n
That night, I barely slept.<\/p>\n
I walked through every room.<\/p>\n
I touched the photographs hanging on the walls.<\/p>\n
I stepped into the bedroom where my husband had spent his final days.<\/p>\n
I looked out at the trees we had planted together in the yard.<\/p>\n

My younger daughter nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you want to stay here for another ten years, then stay. If tomorrow you decide you\u2019d like someone to help with cleaning or grocery shopping, we\u2019ll pay for it. But the decision has to be yours.\u201d<\/p>\n
At that moment, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders.<\/p>\n
That same evening, I called my oldest daughter.<\/p>\n
I told her I wasn\u2019t selling the house.<\/p>\n
At least not now.<\/p>\n
And that if I ever made that decision, it would be for my own well-being\u2014not to solve someone else\u2019s financial problems.<\/p>\n
She got angry.<\/p>\n
She told me I was stubborn and that I didn\u2019t trust my own family.<\/p>\n
Maybe she\u2019s right.<\/p>\n
Maybe one day I really will need to move somewhere smaller.<\/p>\n
But I\u2019ve learned one thing.<\/p>\n
A decision that important should be made when your heart tells you the time is right.<\/p>\n
