Throughout this entire year, I haven\u2019t spent a single dollar of the money he\u2019s given me.<\/p>\n
Not a single one.<\/p>\n
Every penny is sitting in a separate bank account.<\/p>\n
Month after month, I\u2019ve been setting it aside.<\/p>\n
Not for me.<\/p>\n
For him.<\/p>\n
I have only one plan.<\/p>\n
The day he decides to move out of my house, I\u2019m going to give him back every single dollar.<\/p>\n
I want him to have a security deposit for an apartment.<\/p>\n
To be able to buy the basic furniture he\u2019ll need.<\/p>\n
To start his adult life without having to borrow money.<\/p>\n
But I don\u2019t want him to know that now.<\/p>\n
Because if I told him, the lesson would lose its purpose.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t ask him to contribute because I desperately needed the money.<\/p>\n
I did it because I want him to understand that life costs money.<\/p>\n
That every bill is paid by someone.<\/p>\n
That food doesn\u2019t magically appear in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n
And that independence also means responsibility.<\/p>\n
I have to admit, though, that over the past few days, I\u2019ve wondered whether I\u2019ve taken things too far.<\/p>\n
Maybe asking him to contribute isn\u2019t the problem.<\/p>\n
Maybe it\u2019s the way I\u2019m still trying to control his every move.<\/p>\n
If I expect him to behave like an adult and contribute to the household expenses, then maybe I also need to start treating him, little by little, like an adult.<\/p>\n
Maybe the rules need to evolve as he grows older.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not giving up on the idea that everyone should contribute when they\u2019re able.<\/p>\n
But I\u2019ve realized that respect goes both ways.<\/p>\n
One day, I\u2019ll give him back every dollar he\u2019s paid me.<\/p>\n
I just hope that when he finally learns the truth, he\u2019ll understand that I never wanted to profit from him.<\/p>\n
