\u201cPlease don\u2019t be upset with me for telling you this… but your daughter invited her future mother-in-law to go with her to choose her wedding dress. She\u2019s been telling everyone that you refused to help her and that, because of you, she might have to give up the wedding she\u2019s always dreamed of.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hung up the phone and sat motionless on the couch.<\/p>\n
I wasn\u2019t crying over the dress.<\/p>\n

What hurt was realizing that my own daughter had come to believe that cherished memories could simply be turned into money without losing any meaning.<\/p>\n

Two days later, my daughter called me.<\/p>\n
Not to apologize.<\/p>\n
But to tell me that if I wasn\u2019t willing to make \u201cone last sacrifice for her happiness,\u201d then there was no point in my coming to the wedding.<\/p>\n
For a few seconds, I couldn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n
