Her desk was turned sideways. Boxes, blankets, and pillows were stacked in the center of the room as if someone were building a fort.

Standing in the middle of it all was my husband, David.

Beside him was our next-door neighbor, Mr. Hernandez, holding one end of a heavy wooden bookshelf.

Both men looked up at me at the same time.

“Honey?” David said, startled. “You’re home already?”

I stared at them.

“What is going on?” I asked, struggling to keep my voice low. “Why is Emma sleeping on the kitchen floor?”

Neither of them answered immediately.

David set the bookshelf down carefully before walking toward me.

“I was going to explain tomorrow morning,” he said.

“No,” I replied. “Explain now.”

He rubbed the back of his neck and glanced toward the window.

“Come here.”

He pulled back the curtain.

At first I didn’t notice anything unusual.

Then I saw the enormous oak tree in our backyard.

One of its thick branches had split completely down the middle. It was hanging directly over Emma’s bedroom, supported only by smaller limbs that looked ready to give way.

I felt my stomach drop.

“The storm on Tuesday?” David asked.

I nodded.

“That branch cracked during the wind. An arborist came the next morning and said it could fall through the roof at any time. They couldn’t remove it until this weekend because of emergency calls all over town.”

I looked back at the room.

“So… you emptied it?”

“We moved everything away from the window,” he said. “If the branch came through, we’d lose furniture, not Emma.”

I folded my arms.

“Then why wasn’t she sleeping in our room?”

David sighed.

“She refused.”

Before I could respond, Mr. Hernandez smiled.

“Your daughter is one stubborn young lady.”

David laughed softly.

“I offered my side of the bed. She said she couldn’t sleep because she kept worrying about us.”

“So the kitchen?”

“The kitchen is the only room in the house that’s completely away from the tree,” David explained. “She said if she slept there, she’d know everyone was safe.”

I blinked.

“Then why were you moving furniture in the middle of the night?”

“We got a call from the tree company,” Mr. Hernandez said. “They had an opening first thing tomorrow morning. They told us to clear the room tonight so they’d have space to work as soon as they arrived.”

David nodded.

“I didn’t expect you until after one because of the flight delay. Then your messages stopped coming.”

“My phone died at the airport,” I admitted quietly.

For a long moment, none of us spoke.

I looked toward the kitchen.

Emma was still asleep.

“She spent every night on that floor?” I asked.

David nodded.

“I tried carrying her back to our room twice. Both times she woke up and came right back here.”

He smiled with tired affection.

“She said she was guarding the house.”

The next morning, the sound of chainsaws filled the backyard.

The cracked branch was even larger than I had realized. When it finally came down, it hit the lawn with enough force to shake the windows.

The crew leader walked over afterward.

“You were lucky,” he said. “Another strong storm, and that thing probably would have gone straight through the roof.”

I looked at David.

He hadn’t overreacted.

If anything, he’d acted just in time.

Emma wandered outside wrapped in a blanket, rubbing her eyes.

“Is it gone?”

The crew leader pointed to the massive section of tree lying in the yard.

“All gone.”

She smiled with obvious relief.

“I can sleep in my room again?”

David looked at me before answering.

“If Mom says it’s okay.”

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.

“I think it’s more than okay.”

That afternoon we put her bedroom back together.

The bookshelf returned to its corner.

Her desk went beneath the window.

Her favorite photos and books were placed exactly where she’d left them.

As we finished, I noticed the pillow and blanket she’d been using in the kitchen.

“I wish you had called me,” I told David quietly.

“I almost did,” he admitted. “But you were already stressed about your presentation. Emma kept saying, ‘Mom can’t fix the tree from another state. She’ll just worry.'”

I looked at my daughter.

She shrugged.

“I wanted you to do well at work.”

I hugged her tightly.

“You never have to protect me from worrying.”

She smiled into my shoulder.

“I know.”

That night, after Emma had fallen asleep in her own bed, David and I stood in the backyard looking at the freshly cut stump.

“It could have been so much worse,” I said.

He slipped his hand into mine.

“It could have.”

Sometimes the scariest moments aren’t caused by betrayal or secrets.
