“They closed the bathroom door,” Lily said.<\/p>\n

I swallowed.<\/p>\n

“And then what?”<\/p>\n

“Daddy took out a little box with needles.”<\/p>\n

My pulse raced.<\/p>\n

“They poked Uncle Jim’s finger.”<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

“They what?”<\/p>\n

“They poked Daddy’s finger too.”<\/p>\n

She held up her own tiny hand.<\/p>\n

“Just like when the doctor checks my blood.”<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

“Then what happened?”<\/p>\n

“They put little drops on a card.”<\/p>\n

She smiled proudly, happy she was remembering everything.<\/p>\n

“Then Daddy hugged Uncle Jim.”<\/p>\n

I looked toward the beach.<\/p>\n

Bruce and Jim were still talking, completely unaware that my world had nearly fallen apart.<\/p>\n

“Lily,” I asked carefully, “did Daddy tell you why it was a secret?”<\/p>\n

“He said it was supposed to be a surprise.”<\/p>\n

“A surprise?”<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

“He said not to tell you because he wanted to explain everything himself.”<\/p>\n

Relief washed over me, but it was quickly replaced by confusion.<\/p>\n

Blood?<\/p>\n

A surprise?<\/p>\n

I stood up and walked straight toward the two men.<\/p>\n

Bruce saw my expression immediately.<\/p>\n

“Everything okay?”<\/p>\n

“We need to talk.”<\/p>\n

Jim’s face turned pale before I had even spoken another word.<\/p>\n

“What happened?” Bruce asked.<\/p>\n

“Lily told me about the hotel room.”<\/p>\n

Neither of them said anything.<\/p>\n

The silence lasted just long enough to make my imagination start working again.<\/p>\n

Finally Bruce sighed.<\/p>\n

“I guess the surprise is ruined.”<\/p>\n

“What surprise?”<\/p>\n

He exchanged a glance with Jim.<\/p>\n

Then Jim reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded envelope.<\/p>\n

Inside was a DNA test kit receipt.<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n

“What is this?”<\/p>\n

Jim spoke first.<\/p>\n

“You know I’ve always wondered about my biological father.”<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

Our mother had raised us alone. She’d always insisted we had different fathers but had refused to discuss the past.<\/p>\n

“A few months ago,” Jim continued, “I found an old letter among Mom’s things.”<\/p>\n

He handed it to me.<\/p>\n

The letter revealed something neither of us had ever suspected.<\/p>\n

The man who raised Bruce before he was adopted shared the same last name as the man listed on Jim’s original birth records.<\/p>\n

Bruce smiled awkwardly.<\/p>\n

“We started wondering if there was some kind of family connection.”<\/p>\n

“You thought…”<\/p>\n

“That Jim and I might actually be cousins.”<\/p>\n

I stared at them.<\/p>\n

“So you secretly took DNA samples?”<\/p>\n

Bruce rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n

“We knew if we told you before we had answers, you’d worry for weeks.”<\/p>\n

“So you told a five-year-old to keep a secret instead?”<\/p>\n

Both men looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

“That,” Jim admitted, “was a terrible decision.”<\/p>\n

Bruce nodded immediately.<\/p>\n

“It was. We shouldn’t have done that.”<\/p>\n

“So?”<\/p>\n

I asked.<\/p>\n

“What were the results?”<\/p>\n

Jim smiled for the first time.<\/p>\n

“We’re not cousins.”<\/p>\n

I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.<\/p>\n

“But,” he continued, “I did finally learn who my biological father was.”<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

“He passed away years ago.”<\/p>\n

“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n

“So am I,” he replied.<\/p>\n

“But I also found two half-sisters.”<\/p>\n

Bruce put a hand on his shoulder.<\/p>\n

“They’ve already spoken on the phone.”<\/p>\n

I looked at my husband.<\/p>\n

“You really scared me.”<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n

That evening, after Lily had fallen asleep, Bruce sat beside me on the balcony overlooking the ocean.<\/p>\n

“I should’ve remembered what we always tell her.”<\/p>\n

“No secrets.”<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

“We wanted to protect the surprise.”<\/p>\n

“And accidentally taught her the opposite lesson.”<\/p>\n

The next morning we apologized to Lily together.<\/p>\n

Bruce knelt beside her.<\/p>\n

“Sweetheart, Mommy was right.”<\/p>\n

“If an adult ever tells you to keep a secret from Mommy or Daddy, you should tell the other parent right away.”<\/p>\n

“Even you?”<\/p>\n

“Especially me,” Bruce said with a smile.<\/p>\n

Lily wrapped her arms around both of us.<\/p>\n

“I knew Mommy would want to know.”<\/p>\n

I kissed the top of her head.<\/p>\n

“And you were absolutely right.”<\/p>\n

The vacation ended with more laughter than tears.<\/p>\n

Jim returned home with the beginning of a relationship he’d spent his whole life missing.<\/p>\n

Bruce and I returned with a valuable reminder.<\/p>\n

Children don’t always understand the difference between a surprise and a secret.<\/p>\n

It’s our job to teach them.<\/p>\n

And from that day forward, our family had one simple rule:<\/p>\n

Surprises have an ending. Secrets that ask children to hide things from the people who love them never do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
