I finished every bite while reading a novel I had started months earlier but never had time to finish.<\/p>\n

The next morning, Christmas Eve, my phone finally rang.<\/p>\n

It was my daughter.<\/p>\n

“Mom?”<\/p>\n

“Hi, sweetheart.”<\/p>\n

“Where are you?”<\/p>\n

“At the coast.”<\/p>\n

“I decided to take a Christmas vacation.”<\/p>\n

“You left?”<\/p>\n

“I did.”<\/p>\n

“But who’s supposed to watch them?”<\/p>\n

I took a slow breath.<\/p>\n

“I assumed you had arranged childcare before planning a vacation.”<\/p>\n

She didn’t answer.<\/p>\n

Instead, I heard muffled voices in the background.<\/p>\n

Then my son got on the phone.<\/p>\n

“Mom, this isn’t funny.”<\/p>\n

“It wasn’t meant to be.”<\/p>\n

“You know we already booked the hotel.”<\/p>\n

“And I booked mine.”<\/p>\n

There was another long silence.<\/p>\n

Finally, I said gently, “For years I’ve planned my holidays around everyone else’s needs. This year I planned one around my own.”<\/p>\n

My son sighed.<\/p>\n

“You could’ve told us.”<\/p>\n

“I could have.”<\/p>\n

“And you could have asked.”<\/p>\n

Neither of us spoke after that.<\/p>\n

Before hanging up, I added, “I love all of you. But loving someone doesn’t mean being available every minute they decide they need you.”<\/p>\n

Christmas morning arrived with bright sunshine sparkling across the water.<\/p>\n

I took a long walk on the beach, collecting smooth shells the way I had as a little girl.<\/p>\n

Later, the inn hosted a holiday brunch for guests.<\/p>\n
