“Before we talk about the house,” I said, “there’s someone I’d like you to meet.”<\/p>\n
A woman in a navy blazer walked toward us from a nearby seating area.<\/p>\n
She carried a leather briefcase and wore an airport security badge around her neck.<\/p>\n

“Who is that?”<\/p>\n
“My attorney.”<\/p>\n
His smile faltered.<\/p>\n
“You brought a lawyer to the airport?”<\/p>\n
“I wasn’t sure what kind of husband I’d be welcoming home.”<\/p>\n

“You can’t seriously think you’re taking everything.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t.”<\/p>\n
“I know exactly what belongs to each of us.”<\/p>\n
He opened the envelope.<\/p>\n

“What is this?”<\/p>\n
“The mortgage records.”<\/p>\n
He looked confused.<\/p>\n
“The house…”<\/p>\n
“…is only in my name,” I finished.<\/p>\n
He looked up.<\/p>\n
“That’s impossible.”<\/p>\n
“It isn’t.”<\/p>\n
“When we bought it, your credit score prevented you from qualifying for the loan. Remember?”<\/p>\n
He said nothing.<\/p>\n
“I qualified on my own.”<\/p>\n
The woman beside him looked back and forth between us.<\/p>\n
“You told me the house was yours.”<\/p>\n
Daniel ignored her.<\/p>\n
I continued.<\/p>\n
“You also forgot something else.”<\/p>\n
I pulled another document from the folder.<\/p>\n
“During the cruise, you never contributed a single dollar toward your daughters’ medical bills.”<\/p>\n
His face tightened.<\/p>\n
“They’re my children.”<\/p>\n
“They are.”<\/p>\n
“And the neonatal intensive care unit cost more than eighty thousand dollars before insurance.”<\/p>\n
His jaw dropped.<\/p>\n
“I covered every deductible.”<\/p>\n
My attorney calmly added, “We also have records showing you withdrew nearly all the money from your personal savings before leaving on the cruise.”<\/p>\n
“I earned that money.”<\/p>\n
“You certainly did.”<\/p>\n
“But while you were posting photos from luxury resorts, Helen paid every household expense herself.”<\/p>\n
The other woman slowly stepped away.<\/p>\n
“Daniel…”<\/p>\n
“Just give me a minute.”<\/p>\n
She folded her arms.<\/p>\n
“You told me your wife wanted the divorce.”<\/p>\n
“No…”<\/p>\n
“You told me the babies hadn’t been born yet.”<\/p>\n
He looked trapped.<\/p>\n
“You told me you were separated.”<\/p>\n
People walking through the terminal had begun slowing down.<\/p>\n
No one said a word.<\/p>\n
She stared at him for several long seconds.<\/p>\n
“So everything you’ve told me was a lie.”<\/p>\n
He reached for her hand.<\/p>\n
“Claire, listen\u2014”<\/p>\n
She stepped back.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
Without another word, she turned and walked away, disappearing into the crowd.<\/p>\n
Daniel started after her.<\/p>\n
“Honey, wait!”<\/p>\n
She never looked back.<\/p>\n

“What happens now?”<\/p>\n
“Now we let the court decide custody, child support, and everything else.”<\/p>\n
“I want to see my daughters.”<\/p>\n
“You’ll have that opportunity.”<\/p>\n
“But being their father isn’t something you can turn on and off whenever it’s convenient.”<\/p>\n
Months later, the divorce was finalized.<\/p>\n
The court awarded me the house, primary custody, and child support.<\/p>\n
Daniel was granted scheduled visitation, provided he completed parenting classes and followed every requirement set by the court.<\/p>\n
At first, he complained.<\/p>\n
Then, little by little, he began showing up.<\/p>\n
Not because he wanted to win me back.<\/p>\n
That chapter was over.<\/p>\n
