I looked directly at her.<\/p>\n
“I’m ending the embarrassment.”<\/p>\n
I held up another statement.<\/p>\n
“Do you remember telling me the account needed another five thousand because of unexpected medical bills?”<\/p>\n
She swallowed.<\/p>\n
“Yes.”<\/p>\n
“The hospital confirmed every bill had already been paid by insurance.”<\/p>\n
Her face went pale.<\/p>\n
“So where did the money go?”<\/p>\n
She didn’t answer.<\/p>\n
“It paid for your kitchen remodel.”<\/p>\n
Several relatives exchanged shocked looks.<\/p>\n

Dad looked at Mom.<\/p>\n

For the first time all evening, Eric had nothing to say.<\/p>\n
I signed my receipt, paid for Noah’s meal, and stood.<\/p>\n
