The man held up his phone.<\/p>\n
“I couldn’t help overhearing the last few minutes,” he said calmly. “I started recording after you raised your voice.”<\/p>\n
Miranda’s eyes widened.<\/p>\n
“You… you recorded me?”<\/p>\n
“I did.”<\/p>\n
He slipped the phone into his pocket before she could say anything else.<\/p>\n
“And before you accuse me of anything, I wasn’t recording strangers at the pool. I was recording someone publicly harassing another guest.”<\/p>\n
She opened her mouth, then closed it again.<\/p>\n
He turned to me.<\/p>\n
“Are you okay?”<\/p>\n
I nodded, though my throat felt tight.<\/p>\n
“I’m fine.”<\/p>\n
“No,” Daisy whispered, still holding my hand. “She’s not.”<\/p>\n
The man crouched so he was eye level with my sister.<\/p>\n
“I like your swimsuit,” he said with a warm smile. “Yellow is my daughter’s favorite color too.”<\/p>\n
For the first time in several minutes, Daisy managed a tiny smile.<\/p>\n
Miranda stood up.<\/p>\n

“I think it does,” he replied. “Because you just tried to humiliate someone in front of dozens of families.”<\/p>\n

Miranda grabbed her beach bag.<\/p>\n
“This isn’t over.”<\/p>\n
She stormed away without another word.<\/p>\n
As the crowd dispersed, I finally let out the breath I’d been holding.<\/p>\n
The man introduced himself.<\/p>\n
“My name’s David.”<\/p>\n
“Thank you,” I said. “You didn’t have to step in.”<\/p>\n
“My wife teaches third grade,” he replied. “I know how much pressure teachers already face. They deserve to have personal lives too.”<\/p>\n
The supervisor apologized for what had happened and offered Daisy and me complimentary meal vouchers.<\/p>\n
“You came here to enjoy the day,” he said. “I hope you’ll stay.”<\/p>\n
I looked down at Daisy.<\/p>\n
“What do you think?”<\/p>\n
She hesitated.<\/p>\n
“Can we still go on the big blue slide?”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“Absolutely.”<\/p>\n
The rest of the afternoon wasn’t perfect, but it became something even better.<\/p>\n
Little by little, Daisy stopped looking over her shoulder.<\/p>\n
She splashed in the wave pool.<\/p>\n
She ate a giant ice cream cone that melted faster than she could keep up with it.<\/p>\n
She laughed until she had the hiccups.<\/p>\n

A week later, Daisy had a follow-up appointment with her oncologist.<\/p>\n
Her scans looked good.<\/p>\n
As we walked out of the hospital, she slipped her hand into mine.<\/p>\n
“Can we go back to the water park this summer?”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“Of course.”<\/p>\n
She grinned.<\/p>\n
“And next time, if someone says something mean…”<\/p>\n
I looked at her.<\/p>\n
“…I’m still wearing my yellow swimsuit.”<\/p>\n
“So am I,” I said.<\/p>\n
