“I don’t need a nursing home.”<\/p>\n

“No, Michael. You need peace of mind.”<\/p>\n
He sighed.<\/p>\n
“Dad, please don’t make this harder than it already is.”<\/p>\n
I smiled sadly.<\/p>\n
“For who?”<\/p>\n
He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n
Two weeks later, he arrived with brochures.<\/p>\n
A week after that, he scheduled tours.<\/p>\n

The receptionist finished the paperwork and smiled politely.<\/p>\n
“Our director likes to meet every new resident personally.”<\/p>\n

“My birth certificate listed only my mother’s name. But she left a letter.”<\/p>\n
His voice softened.<\/p>\n
“She wrote that the man in the picture loved me but believed another family could give me a better life than he could.”<\/p>\n
Tears blurred my vision.<\/p>\n
“I never stopped wondering whether you were happy,” I whispered.<\/p>\n
“I was,” he replied. “My parents were wonderful people.”<\/p>\n
He walked around the desk.<\/p>\n
“I searched for both of you years ago, but the records were sealed. I never found anything.”<\/p>\n
I lowered my head.<\/p>\n
“I was nineteen. Your mother died during childbirth. I had no family, no money, and no idea how to raise a baby alone.”<\/p>\n
“You don’t have to explain.”<\/p>\n
“But I’ve wanted to for fifty-two years.”<\/p>\n
David gently placed a hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n
“I don’t blame you.”<\/p>\n
A quiet knock interrupted us.<\/p>\n
Michael stepped inside.<\/p>\n
“Dad? Everything okay?”<\/p>\n
David turned toward him.<\/p>\n
“I think there’s something you should know.”<\/p>\n
Over the next half hour, I told my son everything.<\/p>\n
About the girl I’d loved before I met Margaret.<\/p>\n
About the impossible choice we had faced.<\/p>\n
About the adoption I had buried so deeply that not even my wife had known every detail.<\/p>\n
Michael listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n

“For what?”<\/p>\n

A month later, my apartment had grab bars in the bathroom, better lighting, and a medical alert system.<\/p>\n
Michael visited every Sunday with the grandchildren.<\/p>\n
David came every other weekend.<\/p>\n
