She spent most of her time in her room, coming out only to make coffee or help with my daughter. Ryan noticed she seemed quiet, but he brushed it off.<\/p>\n
“She’s probably embarrassed about getting sick all the time,” he said.<\/p>\n
I forced a smile.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“It’s time,” she whispered.<\/p>\n
She reached into her purse and pulled out an old envelope.<\/p>\n
Inside were several photographs.<\/p>\n
The first showed her sitting beside an elderly man outside a coffee shop.<\/p>\n
The second showed the same man holding her hand.<\/p>\n
The third was of the two of them smiling together at a baseball game.<\/p>\n
“I met him eight months ago,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Who is he?”<\/p>\n
She took a deep breath.<\/p>\n
“His name is Thomas.”<\/p>\n
I waited.<\/p>\n
“He was your father-in-law’s best friend.”<\/p>\n
I felt the air leave my lungs.<\/p>\n
“The same Thomas who came to Ryan’s graduation?”<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
“He and your father-in-law served in the Army together. After my husband died, he checked on me from time to time. Last year, after he lost his wife, we started meeting for coffee.”<\/p>\n
I stared at the pictures again.<\/p>\n
There was nothing inappropriate about them.<\/p>\n
Just two lonely people who looked genuinely happy.<\/p>\n
“We never meant for this to happen,” Maria said, tears filling her eyes. “At our age, we didn’t think pregnancy was even possible.”<\/p>\n
“Does Thomas know?”<\/p>\n
“He found out yesterday.”<\/p>\n
“And?”<\/p>\n
A small smile appeared through her tears.<\/p>\n
“He asked me to marry him.”<\/p>\n
I couldn’t help smiling back.<\/p>\n
“Then why were you so afraid?”<\/p>\n
She looked away.<\/p>\n
“Because Ryan adored his father. I was terrified he’d think I was replacing him.”<\/p>\n
That evening, we invited Thomas over.<\/p>\n
Ryan had no idea why.<\/p>\n
When he opened the front door and saw him standing there, he smiled.<\/p>\n
“Mr. Brooks! It’s been forever.”<\/p>\n
Thomas smiled nervously.<\/p>\n
“It has.”<\/p>\n
We all sat in the living room.<\/p>\n

“Are you happy?”<\/p>\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n
He stayed silent for another moment before facing her again.<\/p>\n
“I miss Dad every day.”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
“But he also loved you more than anything. He would’ve wanted you to keep living.”<\/p>\n
Maria covered her mouth, overwhelmed.<\/p>\n
Ryan walked across the room and hugged her.<\/p>\n
“I just wish you’d trusted me enough to tell me sooner.”<\/p>\n
She held him tightly.<\/p>\n
“I was afraid of losing my son.”<\/p>\n
“You never could.”<\/p>\n
A few months later, Ryan walked his mother down the aisle at her small wedding to Thomas.<\/p>\n
