My husband, Ethan, walked over and stood beside me.<\/p>\n

“Is everything okay?” he asked.<\/p>\n

I nodded without taking my eyes off my father.<\/p>\n

Several of the adults at the party had stopped talking.<\/p>\n

My sister-in-law quietly led the children toward the bounce house in the far corner of the yard.<\/p>\n

“I knew you’d eventually come looking for money.”<\/p>\n

“You expected this?”<\/p>\n

“I expected you the day my company was featured in the news.”<\/p>\n

He stared at me.<\/p>\n

“I also expected you’d threaten legal action.”<\/p>\n

“You don’t know the law.”<\/p>\n

“I know enough.”<\/p>\n

I opened an email and turned the screen toward him.<\/p>\n

“My attorney explained that parents who abandon their minor children often lose the ability to claim support later in life. Especially when there’s documented evidence.”<\/p>\n

His expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n

“What evidence?”<\/p>\n

I looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n

“The police report my aunt filed after you threw me out.”<\/p>\n

His mouth fell slightly open.<\/p>\n

“The school counselor’s statements.”<\/p>\n

I swiped to another document.<\/p>\n

“My mother’s sister kept everything.”<\/p>\n

Another swipe.<\/p>\n

“Copies of your signed refusal to provide child support after I left.”<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

“I’ve spent years building a peaceful life,” I continued. “I wasn’t preparing to fight you.”<\/p>\n

I slipped the phone back into my purse.<\/p>\n

“I was preparing to protect my family.”<\/p>\n

For the first time since he arrived, he looked old.<\/p>\n

Not elderly.<\/p>\n

Just tired.<\/p>\n

The confidence he’d walked in with had disappeared.<\/p>\n

“You’d really do this to your own father?”<\/p>\n

I took a slow breath.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

I looked toward Noah, who was laughing while trying to pop bubbles with his cousins.<\/p>\n

“I’m doing it for my son.”<\/p>\n

He followed my gaze.<\/p>\n

“I just wanted to know my grandson.”<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

“You wanted fifty thousand dollars.”<\/p>\n

Silence settled between us.<\/p>\n

Finally, he picked up the untouched gift bag he’d brought.<\/p>\n

“I guess I wasn’t welcome.”<\/p>\n

“You were welcome twenty years ago,” I said quietly.<\/p>\n

“When I was sleeping on my aunt’s couch wondering why my father didn’t love me.”<\/p>\n

He lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

“You missed every chance after that.”<\/p>\n

A police cruiser slowly pulled up in front of the house.<\/p>\n

One of our neighbors had called after hearing the argument.<\/p>\n

The officer stepped through the open gate.<\/p>\n

“Is there a problem here?”<\/p>\n

I smiled politely.<\/p>\n

“No, Officer. My father was just leaving.”<\/p>\n

The officer looked at my father.<\/p>\n

“Sir?”<\/p>\n

After a long pause, my father nodded.<\/p>\n

Without another word, he turned and walked down the driveway.<\/p>\n

He never looked back.<\/p>\n

That evening, after the guests had gone home, Noah climbed onto my lap.<\/p>\n

“Mom?”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, buddy?”<\/p>\n

“Was that really my grandpa?”<\/p>\n

I kissed the top of his head.<\/p>\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n

“Will he come back?”<\/p>\n

I looked at Ethan, who gently squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

“I don’t think so.”<\/p>\n

Noah thought for a moment.<\/p>\n

“That’s okay.”<\/p>\n

“Why?”<\/p>\n

He smiled.<\/p>\n

“Because Grandpa isn’t the person who shares your last name.”<\/p>\n

He pointed toward Ethan’s father, who was helping fold tables in the backyard.<\/p>\n

“Grandpa is the person who always shows up.”<\/p>\n

I felt tears fill my eyes.<\/p>\n
