“You won’t have to,” Daniel replied. “After next week, he’ll know everything.”<\/p>\n
“I just hate seeing him blame himself.”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
There was a long silence.<\/p>\n
Then Daniel spoke again.<\/p>\n
“The closing papers are ready. The house is officially yours.”<\/p>\n
I froze.<\/p>\n
House?<\/p>\n
Renee sniffled.<\/p>\n
“I still can’t believe you did this.”<\/p>\n
“You earned it,” Daniel said. “After everything you did for my family, this is the least I could do.”<\/p>\n

I slowly stood and looked through the window.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n
“You were helping save a child.”<\/p>\n
She nodded through tears.<\/p>\n
“The agency story was the only explanation I could think of that would account for all the appointments.”<\/p>\n
I sank into a chair.<\/p>\n
“So… the seventy thousand dollars?”<\/p>\n
Daniel slid the folder across the table.<\/p>\n
“It wasn’t payment for surrogacy.”<\/p>\n
Inside were documents for a three-bedroom house.<\/p>\n
Our names were on the deed.<\/p>\n
“I sold my vacation cabin,” Daniel said quietly.<\/p>\n
“Why?”<\/p>\n
He smiled sadly.<\/p>\n

Renee grabbed my hand.<\/p>\n

The address was only fifteen minutes from Eli’s daycare.<\/p>\n
It had a fenced backyard.<\/p>\n
A swing set.<\/p>\n

“I don’t understand,” I whispered.<\/p>\n

“Some debts can’t be repaid with a paycheck.”<\/p>\n
A week later, Daniel invited us to his home.<\/p>\n
Lily answered the door herself.<\/p>\n
She was thin from treatment, but she had a bright smile.<\/p>\n
She ran straight to Renee and hugged her.<\/p>\n
“Mom says you’re my superhero.”<\/p>\n
Renee laughed and hugged her back.<\/p>\n
“No, sweetheart. The doctors are.”<\/p>\n

“They couldn’t do it without people like you.”<\/p>\n
Driving home that evening, I reached over and took my wife’s hand.<\/p>\n

“For what?”<\/p>\n
“For believing I had failed you.”<\/p>\n
She squeezed my fingers.<\/p>\n
