I took a deep breath, picked up the tray, and walked back into the dining room.<\/p>\n

“The first folder,” I replied, “shows every transfer from my business account into companies registered under Gloria’s name.”<\/p>\n

Gloria’s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”<\/p>\n

“You will.”<\/p>\n

I slid the bank statements toward her.<\/p>\n

“Every invoice was traced. Every signature was verified.”<\/p>\n

Daniel pushed the papers aside.<\/p>\n

“This is ridiculous.”<\/p>\n

“It gets better.”<\/p>\n

I picked up the flash drive.<\/p>\n

“This contains security footage from inside and outside this house.”<\/p>\n

Vanessa folded her arms.<\/p>\n

“So?”<\/p>\n

“So it shows you entering my office after midnight while I was away on business.”<\/p>\n

She swallowed.<\/p>\n

“It also shows you removing files from my desk.”<\/p>\n

“I had permission.”<\/p>\n

“No,” I said calmly. “You had confidence that I’d never check.”<\/p>\n

Daniel stood abruptly.<\/p>\n

“Enough.”<\/p>\n

His voice was louder now, but not nearly as confident as before.<\/p>\n

“You’ve lost your mind.”<\/p>\n

“No,” I answered. “I finally stopped ignoring what was right in front of me.”<\/p>\n

I placed several printed screenshots on the table.<\/p>\n

Daniel recognized them immediately.<\/p>\n

His face turned pale.<\/p>\n

Messages.<\/p>\n

Photos.<\/p>\n

Hotel reservations.<\/p>\n

Conversations with my former assistant stretching back nearly a year.<\/p>\n

“You hacked my account.”<\/p>\n

“I didn’t have to.”<\/p>\n

“The tablet synced automatically to our home network. You never logged out.”<\/p>\n

Gloria looked from the screenshots to her son.<\/p>\n

“Daniel…”<\/p>\n

He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n

Vanessa stared at the floor.<\/p>\n

Then the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n

Nobody moved.<\/p>\n

It rang again.<\/p>\n

“I’ll get it,” I said.<\/p>\n

When I opened the front door, my attorney stood beside two detectives.<\/p>\n

One of them held a folder.<\/p>\n

The other showed his badge.<\/p>\n

“Ms. Carter?”<\/p>\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n

“We received your documentation.”<\/p>\n

“I’ve been expecting you.”<\/p>\n

Daniel appeared in the hallway.<\/p>\n

“What is this?”<\/p>\n

The detective looked at him.<\/p>\n

“We’d like to speak with everyone regarding allegations of financial fraud and theft.”<\/p>\n

Gloria tried to interrupt.<\/p>\n

“This is a family misunderstanding.”<\/p>\n

The detective shook his head.<\/p>\n

“The documents suggest otherwise.”<\/p>\n

Within minutes, the dining room that had been filled with smug laughter became painfully quiet.<\/p>\n

The detectives photographed the paperwork and collected the flash drive.<\/p>\n

My attorney remained beside me without saying much.<\/p>\n

He didn’t need to.<\/p>\n

Everything that mattered had already been documented.<\/p>\n

As Gloria and Vanessa answered questions, Daniel pulled me aside.<\/p>\n

The house remained mine because I had purchased it long before we married and had carefully kept the ownership separate.<\/p>\n

The investigation eventually recovered much of the money taken from my business.<\/p>\n
