The priest smiled faintly.<\/p>\n
“I asked you twice to keep your hands to yourself.”<\/p>\n
The investigator continued.<\/p>\n
“For the past several weeks, reports have linked officers assigned to this stretch of road with repeated extortion of motorists. Today wasn’t random.”<\/p>\n
Carter swallowed hard.<\/p>\n
“You set me up?”<\/p>\n
“No,” Father Nathan replied evenly. “You made your own choices.”<\/p>\n
The investigator nodded toward the patrol car.<\/p>\n
“Your body camera has been recording.”<\/p>\n
Carter instinctively reached toward his chest.<\/p>\n
“So has the audio device inside the colonel’s cross.”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Even the wind seemed to stop.<\/p>\n
The partner spoke for the first time.<\/p>\n
“I… I didn’t ask anyone for money.”<\/p>\n
“We’ll sort out everyone’s role,” the investigator answered. “For now, both of you are relieved of duty.”<\/p>\n
Another unmarked vehicle pulled onto the shoulder.<\/p>\n
Two uniformed supervisors stepped out, followed by an internal affairs lieutenant.<\/p>\n

An hour later, after giving his statement, Father Nathan finally climbed back into his old SUV.<\/p>\n
One of the investigators apologized for delaying him.<\/p>\n
“I appreciate everything you did today.”<\/p>\n
The priest smiled.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t do it for an investigation.”<\/p>\n
“No?”<\/p>\n
“I did it because tomorrow another frightened driver might have come through here. Maybe a young family. Maybe an elderly couple. Maybe someone who couldn’t afford to lose a week’s paycheck.”<\/p>\n
The investigator nodded.<\/p>\n
“I understand.”<\/p>\n
Father Nathan started the engine.<\/p>\n
The old SUV rattled to life.<\/p>\n
Before driving away, he glanced once more at the road where the confrontation had begun.<\/p>\n
