“I am.”<\/p>\n

“And what’s that?”<\/p>\n
“He said that people who yell the loudest are usually carrying something they don’t know how to say.”<\/p>\n
He looked away.<\/p>\n
“You think you’ve figured me out after two days?”<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
She adjusted his pillow.<\/p>\n
“I just think being sick is hard enough without having to fight everyone around you.”<\/p>\n
For a long moment, the room was silent.<\/p>\n
Finally, he spoke.<\/p>\n
“My wife died four years ago.”<\/p>\n
Mary didn’t interrupt.<\/p>\n
“My sons run my businesses now. They visit when lawyers are around or reporters are nearby. Otherwise…” He shrugged. “They’re busy.”<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n
“They’re already arguing over my estate.”<\/p>\n
He gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n
“They act like I’m already gone.”<\/p>\n
Mary quietly pulled up a chair.<\/p>\n
“That must be lonely.”<\/p>\n
He swallowed.<\/p>\n
“It is.”<\/p>\n
It was the first honest conversation he’d had in years.<\/p>\n
From then on, things began to change little by little.<\/p>\n
He stopped pressing the call button just to test the staff.<\/p>\n
He thanked the nurses when they brought his meals.<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n
