“An attorney?”<\/p>\n

“She asked that her final paperwork be completed before she died.”<\/p>\n

For the first time, the confidence on his face began to fade.<\/p>\n

“What paperwork?”<\/p>\n

The doctor spoke calmly.<\/p>\n

“She decided to donate the proceeds from the sale of her condo to a local nonprofit that provides housing and medical assistance to low-income seniors.”<\/p>\n

He blinked.<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

“Her attorney handled everything legally. The property will be sold according to her wishes.”<\/p>\n

“That’s impossible.”<\/p>\n

“It isn’t.”<\/p>\n

“My mother wouldn’t do that.”<\/p>\n

The doctor didn’t raise his voice.<\/p>\n

“She did.”<\/p>\n

He stood there speechless.<\/p>\n

“I was her only son.”<\/p>\n

“Yes,” the doctor replied quietly. “She never stopped calling you that.”<\/p>\n

Silence filled the hallway.<\/p>\n

Finally, he pulled the envelope from his pocket and opened it.<\/p>\n

If you’re reading this, it means I’m gone.<\/em><\/p>\n

“They… talked to her every night?” he asked quietly.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

“As often as we could.”<\/p>\n
