Her words hung in the air like smoke.<\/p>\n
Harry smirked, convinced he’d already won.<\/p>\n
I looked at my daughter one last time.<\/p>\n
“All right,” I said quietly.<\/p>\n
Harry leaned back with a satisfied grin.<\/p>\n
“Good. Now, about that beer.”<\/p>\n
I picked up the grocery bags, set them neatly on the kitchen counter, and turned toward the hallway.<\/p>\n
“I’ll pack.”<\/p>\n
Neither of them followed me.<\/p>\n
I walked into my bedroom, closed the door, and stood there for a long moment. The room was exactly as Martha had left it. Her favorite quilt still covered the bed. A framed picture of us at Glacier National Park sat on the dresser, faded a little by the afternoon sun.<\/p>\n

I let it ring.<\/p>\n
Friday brought voicemail after voicemail.<\/p>\n
“Dad, please call me.”<\/p>\n
“This isn’t funny.”<\/p>\n

I listened to every message.<\/p>\n
I answered none.<\/p>\n
By the seventh day, my phone showed twenty-two missed calls.<\/p>\n

Dad… I didn’t know the house was only yours.<\/p>\n
I read it twice.<\/p>\n

An hour later, there was a knock at my motel door.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know when I stopped seeing everything you were doing,” she said. “You paid for almost everything. You never complained. Harry kept saying it was our house, and eventually… I started believing him.”<\/p>\n
“You weren’t a child anymore, Tiffany.”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n

This time, I believed her.<\/p>\n
A month later, Harry had moved into an apartment across town.<\/p>\n
