She was still wearing her robe, her hair half-brushed, and she looked more shocked than angry.<\/p>\n
“How dare you change our reservations without asking me?” she yelled.<\/p>\n
Martin hurried in behind her.<\/p>\n
“What happened?”<\/p>\n
I folded the hotel brochure I’d been reading and looked at both of them.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t change our<\/em> reservations,” I said calmly. “I changed mine.”<\/p>\n Clara blinked.<\/p>\n “What does that even mean?”<\/p>\n “It means I spoke with the front desk yesterday. They had another room available in the family wing. I moved myself and the kids there.”<\/p>\n Martin frowned.<\/p>\n “You what?”<\/p>\n “I also asked them to split every charge between our rooms.”<\/p>\n Clara stared at me.<\/p>\n “You can’t separate this family!”<\/p>\n “I didn’t. I separated responsibilities.”<\/p>\n Neither of them spoke.<\/p>\n I continued.<\/p>\n “You’ve both made it clear this vacation is for the two of you. Since I’m apparently just the nanny, I figured you wouldn’t mind managing on your own.”<\/p>\n Martin rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n “Come on, don’t be dramatic.”<\/p>\n I laughed, though there wasn’t much humor in it.<\/p>\n “Dramatic? Yesterday your mother handed me a schedule telling me when I was allowed to serve coffee and when I should put your<\/em> children to bed so you<\/em> could relax.”<\/p>\n He looked away.<\/p>\n “I just didn’t want everyone arguing.”<\/p>\n “No,” I replied quietly. “You just didn’t want to disagree with your mother.”<\/p>\n Clara crossed her arms.<\/p>\n “So now you’re punishing everyone?”<\/p>\n “No. I’m setting boundaries.”<\/p>\n I picked up my beach bag.<\/p>\n “The kids and I are spending today at the aquarium. You two can enjoy the beach together.”<\/p>\n She scoffed.<\/p>\n “And who’s watching the children?”<\/p>\n “I am. My own children.”<\/p>\n I smiled politely.<\/p>\n “But only today. Tomorrow, Martin, they’re your responsibility until lunch. The next day we’ll split the time. That’s what parents do.”<\/p>\n Martin looked genuinely surprised.<\/p>\n “I thought we’d just… do what we always do.”<\/p>\n “I know.”<\/p>\n That answer lingered in the room after I walked out.<\/p>\n The kids loved the aquarium.<\/p>\n We watched sea turtles glide through giant tanks, touched starfish in a shallow pool, and ate ice cream while looking out over the water.<\/p>\n For the first time in years, I wasn’t worrying about pleasing someone else.<\/p>\n That evening Martin came to my room alone.<\/p>\n He knocked softly.<\/p>\n “Can we talk?”<\/p>\n I nodded.<\/p>\n He sat on the edge of the chair, looking uncomfortable.<\/p>\n “I didn’t realize how bad yesterday was.”<\/p>\n “You read the list.”<\/p>\n “I know.”<\/p>\n “But you still expected me to follow it.”<\/p>\n He sighed.<\/p>\n “I’ve spent my whole life trying to keep Mom happy. It’s almost automatic.”<\/p>\n “And what about making your wife happy?”<\/p>\n He didn’t answer immediately.<\/p>\n Finally he said, “You’re right.”<\/p>\n I appreciated the words, but I wasn’t ready to accept them without seeing change.<\/p>\n “I need a partner,” I told him. “Not someone who asks me to stay quiet whenever your mother crosses the line.”<\/p>\n He nodded.<\/p>\n “I understand.”<\/p>\n The next morning Clara appeared outside while Martin was helping the kids put on sunscreen.<\/p>\n She looked confused.<\/p>\n “Martin, aren’t you coming to breakfast?”<\/p>\n “In a minute,” he replied.<\/p>\n “I’m getting the kids ready.”<\/p>\n She laughed as if he’d made a joke.<\/p>\n Then she realized he hadn’t.<\/p>\n “But she always does that.”<\/p>\n Martin stood up.<\/p>\n “Mom, that’s exactly the problem.”<\/p>\n She stared at him.<\/p>\n “I’m their father.”<\/p>\n For the first time since I’d known her, Clara had nothing to say.<\/p>\n Later that afternoon she approached me by the pool.<\/p>\n “I suppose you think you’ve won.”<\/p>\n I shook my head.<\/p>\n “This isn’t about winning.”<\/p>\n “Then what is it?”<\/p>\n “It’s about respect.”<\/p>\n She looked down at the water.<\/p>\n “I raised Martin by myself after his father died. I always worried no one would take care of him the way I did.”<\/p>\n “I understand that,” I said. “But he’s not a little boy anymore.
