“He told investigators the fire made testing unnecessary because my jewelry and wallet had been found.”<\/p>\n
I stared at him.<\/p>\n
“They just… accepted that?”<\/p>\n
“It was eight years ago. Different procedures, less scrutiny, and Dad pushed for a quick funeral.”<\/p>\n
I sat down slowly.<\/p>\n
“Why?”<\/p>\n
Ivan looked toward the window before answering.<\/p>\n
“Because I was going to testify.”<\/p>\n
“Against who?”<\/p>\n
He met my eyes.<\/p>\n
“Him.”<\/p>\n
Everything inside me stopped.<\/p>\n
“When I was working with Dad’s construction company, I discovered he was billing for repairs that were never completed on publicly funded projects.”<\/p>\n
I frowned.<\/p>\n
“He was stealing?”<\/p>\n
“Worse.”<\/p>\n
Ivan rubbed his hands together.<\/p>\n
“He knew some of the buildings had serious safety problems. He signed off anyway.”<\/p>\n
I couldn’t reconcile the man who grilled burgers on Sundays with the one my brother was describing.<\/p>\n
“I collected documents.”<\/p>\n
“I confronted him.”<\/p>\n
“What happened?”<\/p>\n
“He told me accidents happen.”<\/p>\n
My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n
“The next day my truck’s brakes failed.”<\/p>\n
“You think\u2014”<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
He reached into a file box and handed me a worn folder.<\/p>\n
Inside were insurance reports, emails, photographs, and copies of invoices.<\/p>\n
Everything was organized by date.<\/p>\n
“I got out before the crash.”<\/p>\n
“What about the burned car?”<\/p>\n
“It had already been reported stolen weeks earlier.”<\/p>\n
I looked up.<\/p>\n
“So everyone thought…”<\/p>\n
“That I died.”<\/p>\n
“You disappeared.”<\/p>\n
“He helped make sure nobody looked too closely.”<\/p>\n
I felt sick.<\/p>\n
“Why not tell Mom?”<\/p>\n
Ivan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n
“Because Dad said if I contacted either of you before everything was safe, he’d make sure she paid for it.”<\/p>\n
He swallowed.<\/p>\n
“I believed him.”<\/p>\n
We sat in silence.<\/p>\n
Finally I asked the question that had haunted me since the convenience store.<\/p>\n
“Why now?”<\/p>\n
“Because he’s sick.”<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
“Terminal.”<\/p>\n
I blinked.<\/p>\n
“The doctors gave him months.”<\/p>\n
“He doesn’t know I’ve been watching from a distance.”<\/p>\n
“You’ve seen Mom?”<\/p>\n
“Only from far away.”<\/p>\n
His voice cracked.<\/p>\n
“I’ve watched her bring flowers to my grave.”<\/p>\n
He covered his face.<\/p>\n
“I almost walked up to her a hundred times.”<\/p>\n
The room fell silent again.<\/p>\n
At sunrise, we drove together to my parents’ house.<\/p>\n
My mother answered the door.<\/p>\n

The coffee mug slipped from her hands and shattered on the porch.<\/p>\n
