For a second, she seemed surprised.<\/p>\n

Then she laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat year?\u201d<\/p>\n

I told her.<\/p>\n

She stared at me for a moment, trying to place my face.<\/p>\n

I could practically see her flipping through old memories.<\/p>\n

Then her smile slowly disappeared.<\/p>\n

I didn’t say anything.<\/p>\n

The color drained from her face.<\/p>\n

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was awful to you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I hadn’t expected her to say it so directly.<\/p>\n

Most people made excuses.<\/p>\n

They said they were young.<\/p>\n

That answer felt honest.<\/p>\n

Pain sticks with the person receiving it far longer than the person causing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember enough,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

She looked genuinely ashamed.<\/p>\n

\u201cRyan, I’m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

The apology hung between us.<\/p>\n

Twelve years earlier, I would have given anything to hear those words.<\/p>\n

Now I wasn’t sure what they meant.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you hated me all these years?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question caught me off guard.<\/p>\n

I thought about it.<\/p>\n

About high school.<\/p>\n

About all the nights I spent replaying humiliating moments in my head.<\/p>\n

About how badly I wanted people to accept me.<\/p>\n

Then I thought about my life now.<\/p>\n

My friends.<\/p>\n

My apartment in Denver.<\/p>\n

My career.<\/p>\n

The things I had built after leaving that town behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said honestly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hated what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

She listened quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut eventually I stopped thinking about you.\u201d<\/p>\n

For some reason, that seemed to affect her more than anything else I’d said.<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

We sat there for another minute.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that’s not an excuse,\u201d she added quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I’m not asking for sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

She took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted you to know that being the girl everyone liked didn’t magically make me a good person.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time all evening, I felt something unexpected.<\/p>\n

Not anger.<\/p>\n

Not satisfaction.<\/p>\n

Perspective.<\/p>\n

People grow up.<\/p>\n

Sometimes they become better.<\/p>\n

Sometimes they don’t.<\/p>\n

The girl sitting across from me wasn’t the seventeen-year-old who had mocked me in crowded hallways.<\/p>\n

When we finally stood to leave, we walked outside together.<\/p>\n

To show that the girl who once looked down on me now wanted my attention.<\/p>\n

But standing there, I realized I didn’t need that.<\/p>\n

The victory had happened long before tonight.<\/p>\n

It happened when I built a life that no longer revolved around old wounds.<\/p>\n

I shook my head gently.<\/p>\n

She looked disappointed, but not surprised.<\/p>\n

We exchanged a final goodbye.<\/p>\n

I watched her leave for a moment before heading to mine.<\/p>\n

As I drove home, I expected to feel angry.<\/p>\n

Or triumphant.<\/p>\n

Instead, I felt something much simpler.<\/p>\n

Free.<\/p>\n

The person who had once made me feel small no longer had that power.<\/p>\n
