Benjamin covered his face with both hands.<\/div>\n

Then anger.<\/div>\n

The reply came less than a minute later.<\/div>\n

Where did you find it?<\/div>\n

Under Ulyana’s pillow.<\/div>\n

Her answer arrived immediately.<\/div>\n

Don’t touch the blanket. It makes Benjamin feel better.<\/div>\n

I stood in my daughter’s room reading those words again and again.<\/div>\n

Helen knew exactly what I was talking about.<\/p>\n

My hands started shaking.<\/p>\n

I typed back immediately.<\/p>\n

Who is Lydia?<\/p>\n

This time, there was no answer.<\/p>\n

I called her.<\/p>\n

She declined.<\/p>\n

I called again.<\/p>\n

Declined.<\/p>\n

By the third attempt, I knew she wasn’t avoiding the question because she didn’t know the answer.<\/p>\n

Benjamin came downstairs twenty minutes later, freshly showered and dressed for work.<\/p>\n
