Ashley walked toward them as if she owned the place.<\/p>\n

Her expensive heels clicked against the pavement, completely out of place in the dusty shelter parking lot.<\/p>\n

One of the attorneys carried a briefcase. The other held a thick folder.<\/p>\n

Emily immediately tightened her grip on the twins.<\/p>\n

Michael stepped between them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

Ashley’s smile never faded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could ask you the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know exactly why I’m here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d she said calmly. \u201cBecause somebody filled your head with stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael stared at her in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cStories? I have the reports. I have the bank records. I have the security footage.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, a flicker of irritation crossed Ashley’s face.<\/p>\n
