I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mother-in-law took the papers next.<\/p>\n

Her hands began trembling.<\/p>\n

Black and white.<\/p>\n

Recorded with the county.<\/p>\n

Legally binding.<\/p>\n

The house belonged to me.<\/p>\n

Not Ruben.<\/p>\n

Years earlier, Ruben had convinced me to purchase the property in my name because of business liabilities he was facing at the time.<\/p>\n

Linda looked like she couldn’t breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince we’re discussing housing arrangements, I’ve decided to give everyone ninety days to find another place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence was magnificent.<\/p>\n

My mother-in-law nearly dropped her fork.<\/p>\n

Michael stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can’t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda looked horrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would throw family out?\u201d<\/p>\n

The irony was so perfect I almost felt sorry for her.<\/p>\n
