I was proud.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"1994\">So I changed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1996\" data-end=\"2360\">Not into something that would \u201chide\u201d me\u2014but into something that would show every wrinkle, every curve, every memory etched into my skin. A red, dazzling one-piece swimsuit with gold details that I used to wear in my 40s, still hanging in the back of my suitcase. I fixed my hair, put on a pair of gold hoop earrings, and marched out with the confidence of a queen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2407\">I didn\u2019t walk to the pool\u2014I <em data-start=\"2390\" data-end=\"2397\">owned<\/em> the pool.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2409\" data-end=\"2540\">Heads turned. Karen\u2019s group of friends looked up from their cocktails. The housekeepers paused. Even the pool guy gave a thumbs up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2542\" data-end=\"2566\">Karen dropped her glass.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2645\">\u201cI thought I told you to cover up!\u201d she spat, her voice sharp with disbelief.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2647\" data-end=\"2672\">I smiled, sweet as honey.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2799\">\u201cAnd I thought you had manners,\u201d I replied, loud enough for everyone to hear. \u201cBut I guess we both overestimated each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2801\" data-end=\"2950\">A couple of the nannies giggled. Her friends looked away awkwardly. My son, who had just come out with a tray of drinks, stood frozen in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2952\" data-end=\"3119\">I walked to the pool, slid into the water like a swan, and floated on my back. The sun kissed my skin, and I felt every inch of freedom I had forgotten over the years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3121\" data-end=\"3254\">Later that evening, when Karen came to \u201capologize,\u201d she brought me a robe and said, \u201cMaybe you\u2019d feel more comfortable with this on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3256\" data-end=\"3310\">I took the robe, folded it neatly, and handed it back.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3312\" data-end=\"3391\">\u201cI feel perfectly comfortable in my skin, darling. You should try it sometime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3393\" data-end=\"3589\">From that day forward, she never dared speak to me with such disrespect again. And for the rest of the vacation, <em data-start=\"3506\" data-end=\"3509\">I<\/em> was the one the other women wanted to sit next to, laugh with, and swim beside.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3638\">Age doesn\u2019t steal your beauty.
