At first, I thought they were receipts.<\/p>\n
Then I picked one up.<\/p>\n
It was a photograph.<\/p>\n
A little girl, maybe eight or nine years old, standing beside a younger version of Mrs. Adele. Both of them were smiling in front of a Christmas tree.<\/p>\n
Another photo showed a teenage boy in a baseball uniform.<\/p>\n
Another had a baby wrapped in a hospital blanket.<\/p>\n
Every piggy bank was filled with photographs.<\/p>\n

Before the officer could answer, Oliver spoke softly beside me.<\/p>\n

Nobody had been asked.<\/p>\n
Nobody needed instructions.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Hernandez from three houses down brought coffee for the officers. The Millers used their SUV to help organize the boxes. Teenagers who normally ignored everyone suddenly spent hours wrapping fragile ceramic banks in newspaper.<\/p>\n
And all day long, people kept stopping to kneel in front of Oliver.<\/p>\n
Not because he had done something heroic.<\/p>\n
But because he had done something simple.<\/p>\n
He noticed someone was hurting.<\/p>\n

Letters.<\/p>\n
Entire childhoods saved carefully by one woman nobody on our street had truly known.<\/p>\n

A week later, the first letter arrived.<\/p>\n
Then another.<\/p>\n

Former foster children from all over the country began writing to us after the church explained what had happened.<\/p>\n
