Valeria sat on the carpet holding the edge of her dress while shattered glass glittered beside her like ice.<\/p>\n

And for the first time all day, he realized he was losing control.<\/p>\n
Then his mother stood up suddenly from her table.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou little liar,\u201d she snapped at Valeria. \u201cYou trapped my son with your money!\u201d<\/p>\n
The ballroom exploded into whispers.<\/p>\n
I started toward the stage, but Valeria lifted one hand slightly, stopping me.<\/p>\n

Diego\u2019s mother kept yelling.<\/p>\n
