Emily sat on the bed shaking violently, clutching the blanket to her chest.<\/p>\n
Michael stood frozen near the wall, his face white as paper.<\/p>\n
And in the middle of the bed\u2026<\/p>\n
curled up tightly under the sheets\u2026<\/p>\n
was a tiny little girl.<\/p>\n
Maybe four years old.<\/p>\n
The room fell completely silent.<\/p>\n
Susan covered her mouth and started sobbing instantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh God\u2026\u201d she whispered. \u201cNo\u2026 no\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
The child looked terrified. Her cheeks were stained with tears. She held an old stuffed rabbit so tightly her little fingers had gone white.<\/p>\n
Michael stared at Emily in complete shock.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho is she?\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n
Emily broke down crying.<\/p>\n
For several seconds she couldn\u2019t even speak.<\/p>\n
Then finally, through trembling lips, she said:<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Susan stumbled backward into a chair, crying harder than before.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a child?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n
Emily nodded, sobbing uncontrollably now.<\/p>\n
Her whole body trembled.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got pregnant when I was nineteen,\u201d she admitted. \u201cHer father disappeared before she was born. My parents helped me raise her. I was scared, Michael\u2026 every time I wanted to tell you, I got scared.\u201d<\/p>\n
The little girl looked up at Michael with huge frightened eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry\u2026\u201d she whispered softly.<\/p>\n
That nearly destroyed everyone in the room.<\/p>\n
Michael pressed both hands against his head and turned away.<\/p>\n
Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n
The silence felt endless.<\/p>\n
Then suddenly the little girl climbed carefully off the bed and walked toward him holding the stuffed rabbit.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can yell at me if you want,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cMommy cries because of me sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several relatives immediately started crying again.<\/p>\n
Emily buried her face in her hands.<\/p>\n
But Michael slowly knelt down in front of the little girl.<\/p>\n
His eyes were full of tears now too.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d he asked gently.<\/p>\n
\u201cLily,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
Michael looked at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n
Then at Emily.<\/p>\n
Then back at Lily.<\/p>\n
And finally\u2026 he opened his arms.<\/p>\n
The little girl threw herself against him instantly.<\/p>\n
The entire room broke down.<\/p>\n
Even the men were wiping tears from their faces.<\/p>\n
Emily stared at them in shock.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re\u2026 not leaving?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
Michael looked up at her while holding Lily tightly.<\/p>\n

Emily collapsed to her knees crying harder than ever.<\/p>\n

Tom quietly walked everyone else out into the hallway and shut the door behind them.<\/p>\n
