I didn\u2019t lower my phone.<\/p>\n

Mr. Thompson stepped inside slowly, closing the door behind him. \u201cActually,\u201d he said, adjusting his glasses, \u201cgiven the circumstances and the documentation already prepared\u2026 that\u2019s not entirely accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan frowned. \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached into the drawer beside me and pulled out a second folder\u2014the one I hadn\u2019t shown him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to wait,\u201d I said, \u201cbut I guess now\u2019s as good a time as any.\u201d<\/p>\n

I handed it to Officer Daniels first.<\/p>\n

\u201cTemporary restraining order,\u201d I said. \u201cFiled this morning. Along with divorce papers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ryan blinked, like his brain couldn\u2019t catch up.<\/p>\n

Ashley took a step back toward the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t be serious,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cYou think a piece of paper is gonna\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt already has,\u201d Mr. Thompson interrupted. \u201cHe\u2019s legally required to leave the property immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then Ryan\u2019s anger cracked through.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou planned this?\u201d he snapped, looking at me like he didn\u2019t recognize me anymore.<\/p>\n

I held his gaze. \u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hit harder than anything else.<\/p>\n

For the first time, he had nothing to say.<\/p>\n

Officer Daniels stepped closer. \u201cSir, I\u2019m going to need you to step outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
