My boss stepped out to take a call, leaving us alone.<\/p>\n

I crossed my arms slightly, not defensive, just steady. \u201cYou think?\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave a small, embarrassed smile. \u201cYeah. I was stressed, had a terrible day\u2026 but that\u2019s not an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cYou didn\u2019t deserve that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I let the silence sit for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t,\u201d I agreed.<\/p>\n

He looked down, then back up. \u201cI meant what I said just now. You\u2019re\u2026 really good at what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another pause.<\/p>\n

Then I leaned forward slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s the thing, Mark,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cYesterday, you talked to me like I was nothing. Like I didn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t interrupt.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, you saw who I am at work. But I was the same person yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hit him.<\/p>\n

I could see it in his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cAnd I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

This time, it sounded real.<\/p>\n

I took a breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlright,\u201d I said. \u201cApology accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relief washed over his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut don\u2019t forget it,\u201d I added. \u201cBecause next time, you might not get a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded quickly. \u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

My boss came back in, smiling. \u201cLooks like everything went well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt did,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Mark extended his hand again, more respectfully this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking forward to working together.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook it.<\/p>\n

And as he walked out of the room, he glanced back once\u2014no arrogance this time. Just respect.<\/p>\n

Funny how fast things can change.<\/p>\n
