At first, he thought it was a joke.<\/p>\n

I know that because he called me back within minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of stupid game is this?\u201d he barked into the phone.<\/p>\n

I could picture him standing in that same kitchen, the one with the cracked tiles and the old wooden table where everything had always been his way or no way at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a game,\u201d I said calmly.<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then, more cautious this time, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m talking about the house,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s mine now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

Not because it was funny\u2014but because he didn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have that kind of money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d I said. \u201cI didn\u2019t. Not back then.\u201d<\/p>\n

That shut him up.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n

I looked out the window of my truck, parked a few blocks away from the house I had just bought\u2014the same house I was kicked out of like I was nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I want you to see it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

I hung up before he could respond.<\/p>\n

That evening, I drove up to the house.<\/p>\n

It looked smaller than I remembered. Older, too. The paint was peeling, the porch sagging a little, the yard overgrown.<\/p>\n

I stepped out of the truck slowly, taking it all in.<\/p>\n

Now I was standing there with keys in my pocket.<\/p>\n

I walked up to the front door.<\/p>\n

For a second, I just stood there.<\/p>\n

Then I unlocked it.<\/p>\n

The smell hit me first\u2014dust, old wood, something stale.<\/p>\n

Inside, it was almost the same. Same layout. Same walls.<\/p>\n

But emptier.<\/p>\n

Like the house itself had been holding its breath all these years.<\/p>\n

I walked through each room slowly.<\/p>\n

The living room.<\/p>\n

The kitchen.<\/p>\n

The hallway where I used to stand, listening to arguments through closed doors.<\/p>\n

Then I reached my old room.<\/p>\n

The door creaked as I opened it.<\/p>\n

It was empty.<\/p>\n

Of course it was.<\/p>\n

Still, something in my chest tightened.<\/p>\n

I stepped inside and looked around.<\/p>\n

This was where everything had burned.<\/p>\n

Not just my things.<\/p>\n

Me.<\/p>\n

Or at least the version of me that thought I needed his approval to matter.<\/p>\n

I took a deep breath\u2026 and let it go.<\/p>\n

Behind me, I heard the front door open.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t turn right away.<\/p>\n

I knew who it was.<\/p>\n

His footsteps were slower now. Heavier.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Same voice.<\/p>\n

Same tone.<\/p>\n

Like nothing had changed.<\/p>\n

I turned slowly.<\/p>\n

He looked older. Smaller, somehow. The anger was still there\u2014but it didn\u2019t fill the room like it used to.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t your house anymore,\u201d I said evenly.<\/p>\n

He clenched his jaw. \u201cYou think buying this place means something?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does,\u201d I said. \u201cJust not what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

He scoffed. \u201cYou came back to prove a point.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cI came back to end one.\u201d<\/p>\n

That caught him off guard.<\/p>\n

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a folded set of papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not staying,\u201d I said, placing them on the small table by the door. \u201cI already signed them over.\u201d<\/p>\n

He frowned. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI donated the house,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s being turned into a shelter. For kids who need a place to land when they\u2019ve got nowhere else to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, he had no response.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll start renovations next week,\u201d I added. \u201cThis place\u2026 it\u2019s going to mean something different now.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes moved around the room, like he was seeing it for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re just going to give it away?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him\u2014really looked this time.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I know what it feels like to lose everything in one night,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd I know how much it matters when someone gives you a way out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t say anything.<\/p>\n

Not this time.<\/p>\n

I walked past him toward the door.<\/p>\n

When I reached it, I paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t come back for revenge,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cI came back because I don\u2019t need it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I stepped outside.<\/p>\n

The air felt lighter.<\/p>\n

Behind me, the door stayed open.<\/p>\n

But I didn\u2019t look back.<\/p>\n

Some chapters don\u2019t need closure.<\/p>\n
