The SUV sped through the rain like the city didn’t exist.

Adeline clutched the seat, her breathing uneven, pain coming in waves that made her vision blur.

“Stay with me,” a voice said.

Lucien.

He hadn’t taken his eyes off her.

“Look at me,” he added, firm but calm.

She did.

And somehow… the panic eased, just a little.

“Hospital’s three minutes out,” the driver called.

Three minutes felt like forever.

Another contraction hit, harder this time. Adeline gasped, gripping Lucien’s sleeve without even realizing it.

He didn’t pull away.

Instead, his hand covered hers—steady, grounding.

“You’re not alone,” he said quietly.

Those words broke something in her.

Tears slipped down her face.

“I lost everything,” she whispered.

“No,” he replied. “Not everything.”

The SUV screeched to a stop.

Doors opened instantly.

Doctors were already waiting.

That’s when it hit her again—this wasn’t random.

This was planned.

She was rushed inside, lights flashing overhead, voices overlapping.

“Triplet pregnancy—possible early labor!”

“Prep OR!”

“Vitals dropping—move!”

Through the chaos, she caught one last glimpse of Lucien.

Standing still.

Watching.

Like he wasn’t just a bystander… but the one controlling everything.

Then the doors closed.

Hours passed.

Pain.

Voices.

Darkness.

And then—

Crying.

One.

Then another.

Then a third.

Weak, but alive.

Adeline’s eyes slowly opened.

A nurse smiled down at her. “You made it. All three babies are safe.”

Relief flooded her body so fast it hurt.

“My… babies…” she whispered.

“In the NICU, but stable,” the nurse said. “You’re very lucky.”

Lucky.

That word echoed strangely.

The door opened.

And just like that, the air in the room changed.

Nick walked in.

Suit perfect. Smile cold.

Three lawyers behind him.

“I’ll take it from here,” he said smoothly. “Those are my children.”

Adeline’s heart dropped.

But before anyone could respond—

Another voice cut through the room.

“No. They’re not going anywhere.”

Lucien stepped in.

No rush.

No noise.

But every single person in that room went still.

Nick turned, his smile fading for the first time.

“…Lucien Arkwright.”

Recognition.

And fear.

Lucien walked forward slowly, stopping beside Adeline’s bed.

“She’s under my protection,” he said calmly. “And so are her children.”

Nick scoffed, trying to recover. “You don’t get involved in family matters.”

Lucien’s gaze didn’t move.

“This stopped being a family matter the moment you tried to buy them with lawyers.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Nick’s lawyers shifted uneasily.

One of them leaned in, whispering something.

Nick’s jaw tightened.

“Do you even know who you’re protecting?” he snapped.

Lucien looked at Adeline.

For a second, something softer crossed his face.

Then he turned back.

“Yes,” he said.

And that one word carried more weight than anything else in the room.

Nick took a step back.

Then another.

Because for the first time—

He wasn’t the most powerful man there.

Without another word, he turned and walked out.

His lawyers followed quickly.

The door closed behind them.

And just like that…

It was over.

Adeline stared at Lucien, her voice barely there. “Why… really?”

He stepped closer.

Then, quietly, he said:

“Because twenty years ago… your mother saved my life.”

She blinked, confused.

“I’ve been looking for her ever since,” he continued. “I didn’t find her… but I found you.”

Adeline felt her breath catch.

“And now,” he added, glancing toward the nursery window, “I’m making sure no one takes your future away.”

For the first time in what felt like forever…

She felt safe.

Not because the storm was gone.

But because someone stronger than the storm…

was finally standing on her side.
