I don\u2019t remember grabbing my keys.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t remember locking the door.<\/p>\n

One moment I was in the kitchen, and the next I was in my car, gripping the steering wheel so tight my knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n

Every possible nightmare ran through my head.<\/p>\n

Was he hurt?<\/p>\n

Did he get into a fight?<\/p>\n

Did someone push him too far?<\/p>\n

The drive felt endless, even though the school was only ten minutes away.<\/p>\n

When I pulled into the parking lot, I saw something strange right away.<\/p>\n

There were more cars than usual.<\/p>\n

Not just parents\u2014but police cars. A fire department truck. People gathered near the entrance, talking in low voices.<\/p>\n

My heart dropped even further.<\/p>\n

I ran.<\/p>\n

Through the front doors, down the hallway, straight to the main office.<\/p>\n

The secretary stood up the moment she saw me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then another\u2026 and another.\u201d<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n

Tears blurred my vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the time the first bell rang\u2026 kids were lining up at the door with shoes in their hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked around the gym again.<\/p>\n

Teachers were wiping their eyes.<\/p>\n

Firefighters stood quietly, arms crossed, faces heavy with emotion.<\/p>\n

One of them stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI worked with your husband,\u201d he said gently. \u201cWe heard what happened\u2026 about your boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe saved a child,\u201d the man continued. \u201cThe least we could do\u2026 is show up for his son.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n

I just nodded, tears streaming down my face.<\/p>\n

Then I looked back at Andrew.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t moved.<\/p>\n

His eyes were fixed on the rows and rows of shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuddy\u2026\u201d I whispered, walking toward him.<\/p>\n

He looked up at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom\u2026 are these\u2026 for me?\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice was so small.<\/p>\n

I knelt down in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said softly. \u201cThey are.\u201d<\/p>\n

He blinked.<\/p>\n

Then shook his head a little.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026 I only need one pair.\u201d<\/p>\n

A quiet murmur moved through the crowd.<\/p>\n

I smiled through my tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down at his taped shoes.<\/p>\n

Then back at the new ones.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I thought he might take them off.<\/p>\n

But instead\u2014<\/p>\n

he held them tighter to the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to keep these too,\u201d he said. \u201cDad gave them to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The principal stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should keep them,\u201d he said gently. \u201cAnd you should never feel ashamed of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

A teacher spoke up from behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually\u2026 we were thinking\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated, then smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d like to put them in a display case. If that\u2019s okay with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew looked confused. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

The firefighter answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause those shoes tell a story,\u201d he said. \u201cAbout your dad\u2026 and about you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went quiet again.<\/p>\n

Andrew looked down at them one more time.<\/p>\n

Then slowly nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay\u2026 but I still want to wear them sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

A soft wave of laughter and tears filled the gym.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeal,\u201d the principal said.<\/p>\n

That day changed everything.<\/p>\n

The teasing stopped.<\/p>\n

The whispers disappeared.<\/p>\n

And those taped-up sneakers?<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t represent poverty anymore.<\/p>\n

They represented love.<\/p>\n

Strength.<\/p>\n

And a little boy who refused to let go of the last piece of his hero.<\/p>\n

As we walked out of the school later, Andrew held my hand a little tighter than usual.<\/p>\n
