His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Andrew rubbed his face, pacing once across the living room.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain it to me. Because from where I\u2019m sitting, it looks like you\u2019ve been sending money\u2014our money\u2014to some woman behind my back.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stopped pacing.<\/p>\n

Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since I met him\u2026 he looked scared.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer name is Lucy,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cAnd she has a daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow old?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cFour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason was three.<\/p>\n

The room spun.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to be kidding me,\u201d I said, my voice breaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was before you,\u201d he rushed. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know about her until last year. She contacted me. Said the girl was mine. I got a test done. It came back positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t think to tell me?\u201d I snapped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was going to!\u201d he said. \u201cBut my mom\u2014she told me it would destroy everything. That you\u2019d leave. That we\u2019d lose Mason.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo instead, you lied.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said firmly. \u201cYou were protecting yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The truth settled between us like dust after a storm.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd your mom?\u201d I asked. \u201cWhy hide this in my baby\u2019s blanket?\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew shook his head slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cPanicked?\u201d I repeated. \u201cShe hid proof of your secret life in my child\u2019s things and threw it in the trash!\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither of us spoke after that.<\/p>\n

The silence said everything.<\/p>\n

The next morning, I packed a small bag. Just essentials. Clothes for me and Mason.<\/p>\n

Andrew stood in the doorway, watching.<\/p>\n
