I stared at the message for a long time.<\/p>\n

My hands weren\u2019t shaking anymore.<\/p>\n

That surprised me.<\/p>\n

You\u2019d think discovering your husband was cheating with your own cousin would break you instantly. That you\u2019d fall apart right there on the bedroom floor.<\/p>\n

But something else happened instead.<\/p>\n

Something quiet.<\/p>\n

Something cold.<\/p>\n

A kind of calm I had never felt before.<\/p>\n

From the bathroom I could hear Daniel moving around, opening drawers, the rustle of a towel. Any second he\u2019d walk into the room smiling like always, maybe ask what I wanted for dinner or complain about traffic at work.<\/p>\n

And I knew one thing very clearly.<\/p>\n

Daniel would be there.<\/p>\n

And so would the rest of the family.<\/p>\n

Perfect.<\/p>\n

All day Daniel acted normal. He even kissed me on the forehead before leaving for the grocery store.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t forget,\u201d he said, grabbing his keys, \u201cwe\u2019re going to your parents\u2019 at six.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I won\u2019t forget,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

Around five-thirty we arrived at my parents\u2019 house in Austin, Texas<\/strong>. My dad was outside flipping burgers while my mom set the table. My brother had brought a six-pack of beer.<\/p>\n

And right there, standing near the patio with a glass of lemonade in her hand\u2026<\/p>\n

Was Megan.<\/p>\n

She smiled the moment she saw me.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily!\u201d she said brightly, walking over for a hug.<\/p>\n

I hugged her back.<\/p>\n

And for a second, I almost laughed at how perfect the moment felt.<\/p>\n

Everyone gathered around the table soon after. Plates filled with burgers, corn, and potato salad. Conversations overlapped. Someone turned on music in the background.<\/p>\n

Daniel sat beside me.<\/p>\n

Megan sat across from us.<\/p>\n

They barely looked at each other.<\/p>\n

Smart.<\/p>\n

But not smart enough.<\/p>\n

Halfway through dinner, I stood up and tapped my glass with a fork.<\/p>\n

I pressed play.<\/p>\n

Her voice filled the patio speakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast night was incredible\u2026 I can still feel your hands on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence that followed was heavy.<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s fork clattered onto her plate.<\/p>\n

My brother stared across the table.<\/p>\n

Daniel went pale.<\/p>\n

And Megan looked like the ground had disappeared beneath her feet.<\/p>\n

I calmly set the phone down.<\/p>\n
