The room froze in shock before Helen jumped up in anger, fixing her hair dramatically.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow dare you speak to your elders like that, you ungrateful girl! Mark, look at the snake you brought into this house!\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark stepped toward me, trying to look strict, but his eyes showed pure exhaustion.<\/p>\n

\u201cVera, stop this circus right now. Sit down and apologize to Mom. You\u2019re acting hysterical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour \u2018hysterical wife\u2019 is calling building security and changing the door code right now, Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held out my hand, stopping him from coming closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have exactly five minutes to disappear from my life along with your plans for my address and your secret mortgages. Mark\u2019s belongings will be on the hallway floor in one hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

They left slowly and loudly, throwing curses and trying to carry out even the opened wine bottles. I stood by the door watching the muddy stream of people finally wash out of my space.<\/p>\n

When the last door slammed shut, I immediately called a locksmith. He promised to arrive in fifteen minutes\u2014his shop was in the building next door.<\/p>\n

I stepped onto the balcony to breathe the cold March air.<\/p>\n

Down below, near the entrance, stood my two neighbors\u2014Kate and Sandy, women who always knew everything about everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what now, Vera?\u201d Kate shouted sarcastically while lighting a cigarette. \u201cDid your husband kick you out? Sitting there alone on a day like this!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandy laughed unpleasantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were always so proud of that little flower business of yours! Look at you now\u2014husband gone with his bags and you stuck alone in an empty box!\u201d<\/p>\n

The neighbors were laughing that I was alone on Women\u2019s Day\u2026<\/p>\n

when suddenly five black SUVs filled with flowers drove into the courtyard.<\/p>\n

The vehicles moved slowly and lined up perfectly beneath my balcony<\/p>\n

The engines shut off almost at the same time.<\/p>\n

For a moment the courtyard went completely quiet.<\/p>\n

Even Kate\u2019s cigarette froze halfway to her mouth.<\/p>\n

The first SUV door opened, and two men in dark suits stepped out carrying enormous bouquets of red and white roses. Behind them came another pair with huge boxes wrapped in silver paper.<\/p>\n

Then more doors opened.<\/p>\n

More flowers.<\/p>\n

More boxes.<\/p>\n

By the time the fifth SUV unloaded, the sidewalk looked like a luxury flower shop had exploded in the middle of the courtyard.<\/p>\n

Kate blinked at me from below.<\/p>\n

\u201cVera\u2026 what in the world is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

Because honestly\u2014I didn\u2019t know either.<\/p>\n

The building door opened and the men began carrying everything upstairs.<\/p>\n

One of them knocked on my apartment door.<\/p>\n

I walked inside slowly and opened it.<\/p>\n

The hallway immediately filled with the scent of roses.<\/p>\n

\u201cDelivery for Ms. Vera Lawson,\u201d the man said politely. \u201cWhere would you like us to place the arrangements?\u201d<\/p>\n

My living room was still a mess from the family invasion\u2014crumbs, empty glasses, chairs pushed around.<\/p>\n

But suddenly it didn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust\u2026 wherever you can,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, flowers covered almost every surface in the apartment.<\/p>\n

Roses.<\/p>\n

Tulips.<\/p>\n

Lilies.<\/p>\n

Even orchids.<\/p>\n

One of the men handed me a thick envelope sealed with dark blue wax.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom Mr. Daniel Harper<\/strong>,\u201d he said before leaving.<\/p>\n

The name made my heart skip.<\/p>\n

Daniel Harper.<\/p>\n

The investor who had once visited my small flower shop six months earlier.<\/p>\n

Back then he had been quiet, observant, asking questions about the business. I thought he was just another curious customer.<\/p>\n

Until he offered to buy my entire company.<\/p>\n

I refused.<\/p>\n

The shop had belonged to my grandmother.<\/p>\n

It was the only thing in my life that truly felt mine.<\/p>\n

My hands trembled slightly as I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n

No one who builds beauty for a living deserves to be surrounded by people who try to destroy it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Your husband\u2019s debt has been bought and cleared this morning. The mortgage is gone. The apartment is entirely yours again.<\/em><\/p>\n

I read the sentence twice.<\/p>\n

Then a third time.<\/p>\n

Gone.<\/p>\n

Completely gone.<\/p>\n

There was another line.<\/p>\n

Also, I have purchased the empty building next to your flower shop. If you\u2019re interested, I\u2019d like to fund your expansion.<\/em><\/p>\n

But that conversation can wait.<\/em><\/p>\n

For now\u2014enjoy the flowers.<\/em><\/p>\n

I slowly stepped back onto the balcony.<\/p>\n

Kate and Sandy were still standing there, staring at the line of SUVs like statues.<\/p>\n

I looked down at the courtyard filled with flowers.<\/p>\n
