The girl hesitated.<\/p>\n

Maria felt her heart tighten.<\/p>\n

Daniel ended the call without another word.<\/p>\n

He turned to Maria.<\/p>\n

Maria looked surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t do anything special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel glanced at his daughter, who now held Maria\u2019s hand again.<\/p>\n

Weeks passed.<\/p>\n

Victoria never returned.<\/p>\n

The house slowly changed.<\/p>\n

Lily laughed more.<\/p>\n

She ate meals at the kitchen table every day.<\/p>\n
