I looked at the kids first. They were sitting at the kitchen table now, quiet, confused, watching me like I held the answer to everything. In a way, I did.<\/p>\n

I answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, is this Mrs. Parker?\u201d a serious voice asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Officer Reynolds from JFK Airport. Your husband, David Parker, has been detained. He asked that we contact you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course he did.<\/p>\n

I stepped into the hallway so the kids wouldn\u2019t hear. \u201cWhat seems to be the problem, Officer?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a legal issue regarding the sale of a shared marital property. A freeze was placed on the transaction this morning. When he tried to leave the country, it triggered an alert.\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes for a second. Not out of pain.<\/p>\n

Then I picked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow could you do this?!\u201d he exploded. His voice was no longer confident. No longer smooth. It was cracked. Panicked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou froze the sale?!\u201d he hissed. \u201cAre you insane? They\u2019re holding me in some room like I\u2019m a criminal!\u201d<\/p>\n

I leaned against the wall and looked at the faded family photos hanging there. Beach trips. Christmas mornings. Smiles that once were real.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sold our home without my signature,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cYou gave your children twenty dollars and told them to get out.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was silence on the other end.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years, he had nothing to say.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

He exhaled slowly. Defeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three weeks later, the court finalized the temporary orders.<\/p>\n

The sale was reversed. The buyers backed out once they learned about the legal mess. David\u2019s \u201cdream trip\u201d turned into attorney fees, canceled flights, and a very awkward explanation to his girlfriend.<\/p>\n

As for us?<\/p>\n

We stayed in our home.<\/p>\n

I found a part-time job at a local bakery. Nothing fancy. But honest. The kids started smiling again.<\/p>\n

One evening, while we were making pancakes for dinner \u2014 because sometimes breakfast for dinner fixes more than you\u2019d think \u2014 Michael looked up at me.<\/p>\n
