There was only silence.<\/p>\n

Sophie didn\u2019t look up.<\/p>\n

Matthew sat cross-legged on the therapy mat like he had all the time in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like hospitals either,\u201d he said casually. \u201cThey smell weird. And everybody whispers.\u201d<\/p>\n

No reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to stop talking when I got to the orphanage,\u201d he continued. \u201cFor almost a year. I figured if I didn\u2019t talk, maybe nobody would notice me. And if nobody noticed me, nobody could leave me again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie\u2019s fingers twitched.<\/p>\n

Edward felt his heart pound.<\/p>\n

Matthew leaned a little closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid someone leave you too?\u201d<\/p>\n

The room went very still.<\/p>\n

Anna looked at Edward, unsure. Edward didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Finally, Sophie blinked. Slow. Heavy.<\/p>\n

Matthew nodded like she had answered out loud.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he said softly. \u201cThat hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edward swallowed hard. Two years ago. The accident. The car. The rain. He had survived with barely a scar. Sophie had survived too \u2014 but her mother hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

After that day, Sophie had stopped walking.<\/p>\n

Doctors called it trauma-induced paralysis. Conversion disorder. Complicated grief.<\/p>\n

Big words.<\/p>\n

But Matthew didn\u2019t use big words.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think if you stay in that chair, Mom might come back?\u201d he asked gently.<\/p>\n

Edward felt like the air had been punched out of his lungs.<\/p>\n

Anna covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

Sophie\u2019s chin trembled.<\/p>\n

Matthew reached into his hoodie pocket and pulled out a small, beat-up toy car.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was my dad\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cThey gave it to me in a plastic bag. That\u2019s all I have. I used to think if I didn\u2019t play with it, he wasn\u2019t really gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He placed the car on the floor between them.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he was still gone,\u201d Matthew said. \u201cAnd I was still here.\u201d<\/p>\n

A tear slid down Sophie\u2019s cheek.<\/p>\n

Matthew stood up slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bet your mom liked seeing you run,\u201d he said. \u201cI bet she laughed when you ran too fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie\u2019s breathing grew uneven.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wouldn\u2019t want you to stop,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

Then he did something no therapist had done.<\/p>\n

He held out his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s just stand. Not for your dad. Not for the doctors. For her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Edward realized he was shaking.<\/p>\n

Sophie stared at the small hand in front of her.<\/p>\n

Seconds felt like hours.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

Her fingers lifted.<\/p>\n

They rested in Matthew\u2019s palm.<\/p>\n

Anna gasped softly.<\/p>\n

Matthew stepped back carefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d he murmured. \u201cI\u2019ve got you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie\u2019s legs trembled violently as he and Anna supported her lightly at the elbows.<\/p>\n

Edward didn\u2019t dare breathe.<\/p>\n

For two years, she hadn\u2019t tried.<\/p>\n

Now her feet pressed against the floor.<\/p>\n

Her knees buckled.<\/p>\n

Matthew tightened his grip.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne second,\u201d he encouraged. \u201cThat\u2019s all. One second.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophie cried out \u2014 not in pain, but in fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re okay,\u201d Matthew said quickly. \u201cYou\u2019re not leaving her. You\u2019re living for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then\u2014<\/p>\n

She stood.<\/p>\n

Not straight.<\/p>\n

Not steady.<\/p>\n

But standing.<\/p>\n

Edward covered his face as a sob broke out of him, loud and raw.<\/p>\n

Anna was crying openly now.<\/p>\n

Sophie swayed, then took one tiny, uneven step forward.<\/p>\n

Matthew grinned through tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s it,\u201d he said. \u201cSee? You didn\u2019t forget how.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time Sophie collapsed back into the wheelchair, the room felt different.<\/p>\n

Alive.<\/p>\n

That evening, Edward found Matthew sitting alone in the hallway.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou meant what you said?\u201d the boy asked quietly. \u201cAbout adopting me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Edward knelt in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve signed billion-dollar contracts,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve never been more serious about anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew searched his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t owe me,\u201d the boy said.<\/p>\n

Edward shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t fix her legs,\u201d he said. \u201cYou reminded her she still had a reason to use them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six months later, Sophie walked across the living room of their house in Green Hills \u2014 slow, careful steps \u2014 straight into her father\u2019s arms.<\/p>\n

Matthew stood nearby, officially part of the family now, cheering louder than anyone.<\/p>\n

Because sometimes healing doesn\u2019t come from money.<\/p>\n
