The laughter stopped the second I stepped into the dining room.<\/p>\n
Music was playing softly in the background. The table was covered in fancy dishes, a roast sitting dry and burnt in the middle like some kind of joke. My son, Michael, stood at the head of the table with a glass of red wine in his hand. His wife, Jessica, was beside him, dressed up like she was hosting a magazine party.<\/p>\n
They both looked at me, confused.<\/p>\n
\u201cDad? You\u2019re early,\u201d Michael said, forcing a smile.<\/p>\n
