The patch on his jacket was unmistakable. A well-known motorcycle club. One with a reputation.<\/p>\n

Matthew picked up the crushed bag of sweet bread from the ground and handed it to his mother.<\/p>\n

Then he turned to the bystanders.<\/p>\n
\u201cNext time you see something like this,\u201d he said, voice steady but firm, \u201cdo something. Or you\u2019re part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
No one met his gaze.<\/p>\n
The bikers mounted their motorcycles again.<\/p>\n
Before leaving, Matthew leaned down and kissed his parents on the forehead.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll walk you home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
John looked at his son, eyes full.<\/p>\n
