He held the mug carefully, as if it were made of glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cSlow sips,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not tea. It\u2019s broth. Salt will help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily nodded weakly and drank. The warmth spread through her like a quiet miracle. Her shaking didn\u2019t stop right away, but it softened, like the storm losing its grip outside.<\/p>\n

Daniel knelt beside the bed and checked her pulse again. Stronger now. Still fragile, but present.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou scared me,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

She tried to smile. It came out crooked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

As the night dragged on, he wrapped hot stones in cloth and placed them near her feet. He kept the fire alive. He never once crossed the line he had drawn for himself.<\/p>\n

By morning, the storm had burned itself out.<\/p>\n

Sunlight spilled through the window, clean and bright.<\/p>\n

Emily sat up slowly. She was exhausted, sore, alive.<\/p>\n

He nodded. He understood that kind of past. Everyone up here did.<\/p>\n

She looked at him then, really looked at him.<\/p>\n

For the first time in her life, the future didn\u2019t feel like a trap.<\/p>\n

It felt earned.<\/p>\n

And as the mountain stood quiet around them, Emily realized something simple and powerful:<\/p>\n

She hadn\u2019t been saved by a man.<\/p>\n

She had been saved by her own refusal to give up.<\/p>\n
