My daughter crossed her arms, eyes scanning Manuel from head to toe like he was some unwanted guest who wandered in by mistake.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what now?\u201d she said bitterly. \u201cYou bring strangers into the family home?\u201d<\/p>\n

Manuel stayed quiet. He didn\u2019t raise his voice. He didn\u2019t step back either. He just stood next to me, his hand gently touching my elbow, grounding me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did everything for you,\u201d I said, my voice steady but low. \u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n

My daughter scoffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, with money. That\u2019s what parents are supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me cracked \u2014 not loudly, not dramatically \u2014 just enough to finally let the truth out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t send money because I owed you,\u201d I said. \u201cI sent it because I loved you. Because I thought one day you\u2019d see me as more than a wallet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her \u2014 really looked at her \u2014 and realized how tired I was. Tired of explaining myself. Tired of apologizing for existing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m choosing myself,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Their faces froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor 22 years, I lived for you. I missed birthdays, holidays, funerals. I slept in tiny rooms while you lived in houses I paid for. I never complained.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrei clenched his fists.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t ask you to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cBut you expected it.\u201d<\/p>\n
