The engine\u2019s warmth started working almost right away. Lily pressed her frozen legs against the gas tank, her tiny hands gripping my shirt like it was the only thing keeping her alive.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t cry anymore.
That scared me more than the crying.<\/p>\n
We rode for about twenty minutes, the forest closing in on both sides, snow falling heavier now. The road disappeared behind us, like it had never been there at all.<\/p>\n
She finally spoke.
\u201cAm I in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I said without hesitation. \u201cYou didn\u2019t do anything wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMom said I was bad,\u201d she murmured.<\/p>\n
That one hit hard. I swallowed and kept my eyes on the road.<\/p>\n
We pulled up to the Iron Ravens clubhouse just as night settled in. An old converted warehouse on the edge of town. Lights on. Engines parked. Smoke drifting from the back.<\/p>\n
The guys froze when they saw her.<\/p>\n
Big men. Rough lives. Silent stares.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened?\u201d one of them asked.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, someone brought hot cocoa. Someone else found dry socks. One of the women wrapped Lily in a blanket twice her size.<\/p>\n
She fell asleep on the couch, still holding my finger.<\/p>\n
I called my brother anyway. Not as a cop. As family.<\/p>\n
This time, things were different.<\/p>\n
An investigation followed. The mother was found three states away. Charges stuck. No excuses accepted.<\/p>\n
Lily didn\u2019t go into a cold room with white walls.<\/p>\n
She went to a warm house. A foster family that showed up every day. That cooked meals. That stayed.<\/p>\n
I visited. At first every week. Then every month.<\/p>\n
She learned to ride a bike. Pink helmet. Purple streamers.<\/p>\n
