The water was fast and dark, swollen from days of cold rain. Sprocket and Tiny followed him, rolling up their sleeves like this was just another Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4525\" data-end=\"4632\">I stood there shaking, watching grown men risk themselves for something everyone else had called worthless.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4634\" data-end=\"4732\">One of the bikers tossed me a towel. \u201cSit tight, kid,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve pulled worse outta worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4734\" data-end=\"4758\">Minutes felt like hours.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4760\" data-end=\"4979\">Sprocket went in first, tied off with a rope. The river tried to steal him, pulling hard, but the others anchored him like a human wall. Tiny followed, diving under again and again, coming up coughing, shaking his head.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4981\" data-end=\"5006\">My heart sank every time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5008\" data-end=\"5051\">Then Tiny surfaced, holding something blue.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5053\" data-end=\"5076\">\u201cI got it!\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5078\" data-end=\"5224\">They hauled him up, mud-covered, freezing, grinning like he\u2019d won the lottery. The bike came up next\u2014scratched, dripping, chain rusted, but whole.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5226\" data-end=\"5239\">I broke down.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5241\" data-end=\"5369\">I don\u2019t remember moving, but suddenly I was there, hands shaking as I touched the frame. It was real. My dad\u2019s bike. Still here.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5454\">Bear crouched next to me. \u201cIt\u2019ll need work,\u201d he said. \u201cBut so do most good things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5456\" data-end=\"5673\">We spent the afternoon in a nearby garage the Iron Spartans used. They dried the bike, cleaned the chain, replaced what the river tried to take. Bear worked slow and careful, like he knew exactly what that bike meant.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5675\" data-end=\"5726\">\u201cYour dad sounds like a good man,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5728\" data-end=\"5747\">\u201cHe was,\u201d I nodded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5749\" data-end=\"5818\">Before they left, Bear pressed something into my hand. A folded bill.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5820\" data-end=\"5936\">\u201cOne hundred dollars,\u201d he said. \u201cFor parts. And if anyone messes with you again\u2026 you tell \u2019em who helped you today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5938\" data-end=\"5987\">The Iron Spartans rode out as the sun dipped low.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5989\" data-end=\"6110\">Years later, that bike still hangs in my garage. I\u2019m grown now. Life knocked me down more than once.
